Hi All....again.

I have recently had problems with my bike, at first top end went (after a good 7 years so it done well for itself) so replaced that then had problem with it not gaining enough compression or sparking properly and getting stuck at 6-7k revs.

I changed the reeds and cleaned out the carb and replaced the coil/ht lead as it was only sparking every other.

so this cured that but now all of a sudden my rev counter has just decided to stop working.

I was wondering if it could be a ECU problem? problem in the loom?

any help would be great
many thanks.....once again

probably not much help, but with the 6-7,000 revs issue it could be that your power valve is knackred as your power valve on the nsr starts to work around the 6-7000 rev range.

But that wouldn't explain the loss of compression or your sparking problem.

I had a similar problem with my DT. The exhaust was blocked up with carbon, take it off and if its the same as a DT, it might need repacking.

Anyway check for carbon build ups on the exhaust port etc. Should be all good. Try pulling the sound wadding and baffle thing out if it has one. That'll rule out another possibility.

I'd recommend asking around on a forum for your bike, they'd know more than me or others unless they've had the same bike with the same problem.

Good luck though. Wink

Cleaning out the exhaust is easily done.
Give it a google, some caustic soda (safe on the stock exhaust as there is no ally on there).
Bung a carrot in the end, fill with water and caustic, leave for half an hour, pour away the gunk, repeat maybe once or twice more, rinse, hang up to dry for a bit and bobs your uncle (caustic soda will dissolve the carbon build up, found in old fashioned drain cleaner/unblocker in crystallised form).

Issues revving around 6-7k suggest your power valve is not working.
Turn on the bike, you can get your hand in by the tank and get a finger on the servo. rev it up and see if it moves atall.
It should be open between 0-3,000.
Closed from 3,000 - 7,000 and open from 7,000 upward.

Best regards

Hi all so far,

thanks for your advice, seems to be going above 6-7k revs bunch of crap shot out of the exhaust.

its not a stock exhaust its an arrow system, would this still be ok to run the caustic soda through?

but the problem now is the temp not working, and rev counter not working.

fuses seem ok, worried that all this could be down to the ECU?

IIRC some arrow cans have ally bits in them, so just take it off.

Thumbs Up

OP, you haven't messed around with the PV before this happened did you? If not, I doubt its a PV problem.

And if dirt is coming out of the exhaust, the carbon build up is probably your issue.

Warm the bike up, then pin it on full rev, see what happens, not for too long, and you'll see what's going on. Film it and upload it to YouTube or something similar for us to view, if you can. Wink

If you want to get the tools out and make sure it isn't the PV, you can either take the cover off and rev it, and see how it goes, or you can just pin it and see if it fixes the problem.

If all this fails, have you changed oil brand recently? If so, some oils are too thick for these bikes and clogs up the oil system. If you haven't changed oils recently, this'll be another thing checked off.

No havent messed with the PV Previously. I dont think its a powervalve problem.

I can only work on it at the weekends so will be looking at it tomorrow, I shall make a video.

but yeah powervalve seems to be moving correctly.

oil is the same brand as always.

will keep you all posted.

thanks Smile
