Is it worth it, LPG is about 65p per litre but would I get the same mileage and performance from LPG as petrol?

A bit lower milage generally. I think they reckon it's usually equivalent to about 40% of the price per mile rather than 50%.

Only really worth it if you are buying the vehicle, at a reasonable price, readily converted.

LPG is half the price of derv, but you only get 50-60% of the MPG of derv, so it balances out.

Personally I wouldn't bother. I considered a V8 LPG Discovery, but the 300TDi was cheaper to buy, easier to insure, cheaper to service and about the same to run fuel wise.

Thumbs Up

Head gaskets fail due to overheating or wot?

No point saying that unless you tell us the cause of failure.

Conversion will be worth if if you can work out how much fuel you will save in the time you expect to keep the vehicle.

If I was keeping for a while and gas was easy to find then I would convert.

Also, it depends if you will be able to fill up on LPG as I do know that my local petrol station (privately owned partnered with a BP supplier) will NEVER add LPG to their service because they do not want spend the money in adding that service in their forecourt!

You need to check your area immediate & outlying to see how widespread the LPG service actually is because if it isn't on your route then why bother if you have to travel a distance find somewhere to fill up!

I just searched petrol prices for Brum and go no results for LPG within 20 miles. Sad

Good few here:

I would tend to agree with buying a car with the conversion already done - even if means selling the current one, it's quite likely still a better idea.

LPG gives 80% of the economy of petrol for half the price, and with modern systems the power loss is hardly noticeable.

I wouldn't risk it on a K series though, they're fragile enough as it is without the higher burn temperatures of gas, and because it's dry there's no lubrication for the valves so you can get premature wear of the valves and seats.

My old BMW did about 17mpg on gas and 20 ish on petrol but on a long run on gas would do 200 miles for £20 Thumbs Up

One of the best things you can do with a freelander if you dont actually need the four wheel drive is take the propshaft off and blank the front IRD unit and you will find it drives much smoother and you will get a 5-10% decrease in fuel consumption. One of my customers done it himself and reckons its transformed the car.

Then next time you get stuck going through the gate to a field you simply put it back on...

Very Happy

I have the shaft off ATM as the viscous unit failed and I hate the way it drives without it. I have a spare shaft that is going on at half term.

All you can do is frugal use of the go faster and the go slower pedals.

Maintain the highest recommended tyre pressures.

And try to keep the load to a minimum.
