I don't see why you'd need to take the cover off to prevent jumping, but you would need to take the cover off to properly set your tension.
IMO it's hassle so I'd just change/clean your automatic one up if your CCT is starting to rattle. ____________________ My Flickr |

The instructions for fine tuning the tensioner say just to go by sound rather than visually checking the tension of the chain. (Set CCT to slight resistance and then back off 1/4 turn) Start bike up and listen, adjust accordingly)
I would do as you say and clean up the current CCT and get it back in but its done 35k and they're well know to give up and the price of a new one is around twice what I paid for the Manual Tensioner.

Agree with Timmeh to get it set properly, you need to pop the cover off. Or just stick with an automatic CCT that'll keep it at the optimum tension.
