I've bought an APE Manual Cam Chain Tensioner for my K6 750 as the chain is getting a bit rattly (The standard CCT are well known for failing)

I've seen conflicting opinions on whether I need to take off the Valve Cover and cable tie the chain to the sprockets to prevent jumping - some say its a necessity, but some say you don't have to do it.

So the BCF crew, what say you?

I don't see why you'd need to take the cover off to prevent jumping, but you would need to take the cover off to properly set your tension.

IMO it's hassle so I'd just change/clean your automatic one up if your CCT is starting to rattle.

The instructions for fine tuning the tensioner say just to go by sound rather than visually checking the tension of the chain. (Set CCT to slight resistance and then back off 1/4 turn) Start bike up and listen, adjust accordingly)

I would do as you say and clean up the current CCT and get it back in but its done 35k and they're well know to give up and the price of a new one is around twice what I paid for the Manual Tensioner.

That is an absolutely sure-fire way to wreck your engine, it won't last ten seconds if the cam chain jumps a tooth.

Do what ham suggests and buy a proper one from Suzuki.

Agree with Timmeh to get it set properly, you need to pop the cover off. Or just stick with an automatic CCT that'll keep it at the optimum tension.

Why do Honda and Suzuki keep buying these crap CCTs. Mr Honda if you're listening, STOP IT!

Because they're cheap and mass-produced? CCTs are a consumable item anyway.

Pft, just spend the extra 3p per unit on one that works. They spend millions of yen making bikes the best they can be, then fit them with crap CCts.

I got it.

The R&D boys originally did such an amazing job that the engines would last forever.

Then they realised that no-one would ever need to service them and they would no makey no more monies so the managment forced them to re-designed the CCTs (under pain of death / electric ball torture / eating their children) into ticking timebombs that would catch the unwary out.

A jap-built 4T can easily do 100k if looked after properly.

Have done this and it has worked.

I would recommend removing the cam cover to check chain tension however.

A more adventurous person could cut an inpection pot in the cam cover to make it easier?

right but for the wrong reasons. the likelihood is that the chain will end up like a banjo string.
