Yes, because you appear to be downloading .exe files instead of .torrent files, which would rather imply that you've given your computer every available flavour of digital AIDS by now.

Might I also suggest a better virus scanner than McAfee?

I cringed when I saw .exe

Get rid of McShitty anti V, get microsoft security essesntials and do a full scan.
Also do the same with Malwarebytes. You probably have a bunch of crap on your PC now.

Torrents are usually fine, downloading .exe's is not.

I'd personally nuke the drive and put W7 on there.

I never trust a machine after it's become infected. Always like to go fresh. Which is never actually a bad thing with windows as it seems to get clogged up after a while.

Doh! Doh! Doh! Doh! Doh! Doh!

EDIT - How have I managed that then?

I used: https://torrentz.eu which a search on the forum suggested.

You went for the 'too good to be true' option, and clicked on 'direct download', is what happened.
Torrentz.eu is a directory site, not a torrent hosting site; it lists where the torrents are elsewhere. As such, click on the links that point at other torrent sites, and download from there.

Go here, and download Utorrent client.
www.utorrent.com

Then go here and look for torrents.
www.pirateproxy.net
or here
www.isohunt.com

The files you will get from those sites are .tor files, they will be relatively small, (a few hundred kB to a couple of MB depending on what you are downloading) and when you open them, they will open with the Utorrent client and begin downloading.

What you have done is try to do something without doing any research, and as a result have become ensared in one of the moron bait adware dumps which has no doubt flooded your machine with all kinds of irritating and potentially malicious software.

Torrent files will end with .tor anything that comes from a website anything less than totally above board and is a .exe file, don't run it, because you know it is not what you want, but you don't know what it actually is.

Never, ever run any kind of .exe that you don't know 100% what it is, and where it came from, an executable file can do almost anything to your computer if your account has administrator priveleges.

I would recommend formatting the hard drive your operating system is on, and re-installing windows.[/url]

If he doesn't know how to use Bittorrent do you honestly think he even knows what TOR is?

omgwtf

Uninstall everything and start again. Reformatting is a good option as there will be other n00b stuff installed that is polluting your internets.

Then you need utorrent and the pirate bay.

If your going to be condescending about checking file extensions, you might want to get them right. .torrent is a torrent file. .tor is for "Guitar Musik Trainer"

All the know-it-all advice, but nothing about ISPs blocking the torrent sites mentioned above. If she doesn't know the difference between a torrent and an .exe don't you think she'll need help with a block-avoiding proxy too?

Shereen, use this proxy to get past any possible ISP block you have:

On this proxy ignore the "show all content" window that pops up at the bottom of the screen and wait for the second one that gives the option of "open".
