Hey BCF

Can I run my bike on a AA battery? Laughing
nah

The Problem
After riding my SV regularly during the good weather a few weeks back, I've let it sit for just over one week.
Just to give you a idea of miles covered 2 weeks prior to giving it a break, approx 150 miles for week 1 and around 65 miles on the second week.
I went to start the bike up on Monday, headlights and instrument panel lit up but the second I hit the start ... blegh.
Everything went dead.
Turned it off and on again, not a single light. No headlights, instrument back light or neutral light.

The Attempt To Fix
So out came the battery charger, wired it up to the terminals but still would not start with only the neutral light dimmly illuminated when attempting, the speedo backlight didn't even turn on.
only had about 10 minutes before the rain came down.
So I relocated inside the garage, wired it up again and left it for no more than 5 minutes charging.
Fired up first time, with brightness of the headlights and speedo backlight varying with the revs. Left it on charge for 6 hours at 2amps and packed it away.
Got to be the battery or charging system right?

The Numbers
Today I took a few multimeter reading Shocked
(Worth mentioning the bike started first time without a fuss)

# Off = 12.6v

# On = 12.09v and dropping (the headlights turn on automatically)

# Idle = 12.60v - 12.70v

# Idle with high beam = 12.58v -12.63v

# At 3000rpm = 14.48v (exactly the same with lights)

It's been suggested that I'm taking more out of the battery, than I'm putting back into it. In other words, not riding it enough to recoup the loss.
If that's the case I'll happily invest in a trickle charge system or similar.
Googling the problem bring up compelling evidence that it's either a battery fault or the regulator / rectifier. But without hard results to prove otherwise, it's just like using google to diagnose an illness Laughing (99% You've got aids lolz)

The Plea
End of the day, like most riders I want a reliable bike. More so in the coming months as I plan to travel far away from local help.
So any advice from the BCF masses would be much appreciated

Cheers

When was the battery last replaced?

You can only run a car/bike battery flat a few times before you kill it.

Reg/rec looks ok from those readings.

Cheers Aff Thumbs Up
I've only had the bike under a year and not changed the battery. However it's worth mentioning it wouldn't start when I first viewed the bike, but the dealer had "fixed" it by the time I went to collect.
So if it was charged or changed I cannot tell.

I would suggest getting a new battery then as its probably fucked. Very Happy Thumbs Up

I've had dealers do the same, saying they would stick a new one in there and then just putting anything they had lying around in and writing a new date on it.
