I am fairly new to motorcycles and I recently acquired a 1970 thunderbolt. The kickstart has stopped working properly. If the bike is in first or second gear the bike will move forward if you try the kickstart which it should but when in neutral there is no resistance, the kick will return. I was wondering if this could be a clutch adjustment issue or something else. thank you.

You can still hear it ratcheting and if I play with the clutch cable I can get it to where it has a bit of it's resistance back but not enough to turn over.

Wotcha.

When you say "no resistance" do you mean it turns the engine over easily ( too easily ) or it fails to turn the engine over ?

the kick turns too easily without turning the motor over. there is no compression to the kick while in neutral

I also posted this question on yahoo and someone said it could be related to the compression-release.

Wotcha.

There's no "compression-release" on the A65 engine.

Sounds like serious clutch slip to me.
The good news is . . . it's usually a fairly cheap and easy fix. New clutch plates and springs and the job's a good 'un.
