I have a question about parking. I have Googled around and seem to get conflicting advice, but how do you go about parking in pay and display areas or parking in general? Can you park up on the kerb? It seems not but... Or how about parking in controlled zones out of the hours permitted?

Thanks.

Best bet is to find a local street Nazi.
Different towns have different policies.
Torbay likes you park at the ends of marked on street parking. Most of the car parks have Bike spaces.
However I was a little gobsmacked two years ago when I tried to park in a town car park in Oxford. The warden said leave it on the yellow cross hatchings! There were bikes blocking footpaths in and out of the car park, including mine which isn't exactly a tiddler requiring little room????

OK thanks. It seems strange that different towns have different policies, it seems like it's just down to the local nazi warden in charge. Another grey area then really. I've found a couple of bike zone parking areas in the centre of town, which is great, but there are one or two places I would like to get to but there are yellows in all directions and I wanted to be sure of the rules so that I don't come back to find clamps on my bike or something stupid.

Cheers.

Ive often wondered if you have to buy a ticket at pay and display carparks? I know they have dedicated spaces but it doesnt say anywhere on the price board if motorbikes have to pay or not.

I remember stopping somewhere in the Lakes where it specifically said on the board that bikes were free of charge - but then then a parking Nazi came over when I returned, and said I should have paid "but he would let me off because the wording was not clear".
I thought 'Free' was quite different from 'You have to pay' and told him so.

Basically the number of bikes using car parks in many areas is so small it seems to confuse them.
It's always best to squeeze in some little space away from the regular spaces anyway if at all possible.
In fact I've never paid to park a bike but might be prepared to in a city centre.

I'll never pay, ever. I have no idea why. I guess I have this smug feeling that my bike is good and small and vastly aids in reducing congestion, so really motorbikers should praised for using them. Plus it seems there's motorbike parking in every city centre for free now. Even in London there seems to be ample space right bang in the busy tourist areas. I was pretty shocked I found a place just over the river from the London Eye where I could nip in to use my phone for something. There must have been empty space for about 15 bikes there, right in the heart of the city! Motorbiking FTW.

Not being a local, I rode around car parks in Guildford yesterday looking for bike parking but found none (near-ish to Maplin) so squeezed on the end of a P&D bay outside the shop. Others had parked bikes on pavements on side streets.

I see more and more places with bike parking and even some barriered car parks with official motorcycle lanes to by-pass the barriers... even better!

Quite where we are supposed to securely put a P&D sticker is unknown to me and many aren't even stickers.

I park where ever I want in Guildford and have never had a ticket.

Usually to be found on the council/local authority website.

In Milton Keynes we have some dedicated bike parking but you can also park your bike in any P&D space for free. Don't think they bother to mention this on the signs though Rolling Eyes

Best advice given.

Go to York and you can park in the bike spaces and in some places road side for free.
But go into the castle car park and even if you pay & display you will get a ticket as its NO BIKES.....

Always read the signs at any car park... Thumbs Up

All the council car parks around here are free, most have dedicated spots, but if they are full you can park anywhere providing you dont cause an obstruction, and you shouldn't 'really' park in the car spaces but plenty do without issue.

But then, I live in Cornwall, providing you don't park somewhere obviously stupid, you can get away with anything, until the newbie copper trying to make an impression tries to have a moan, but then they usually just say park somewhere else in future.

MK council does not have the statute in place to ticket bikes, the reason why you can park there.

Bike parking is almost always free, but the rules vary from one council to another. In Enfield It's only free in the m/c bays. City of London has loads of free m/c only areas, they're desperate to ease congestion.

I've just designed a new car park for Victoria Park and the first thing I did was make sure there was somewhere free to park my bike if I visit, it's only fair innit.

Don't know if it's anything to do with not being able to ticket a bike, I'm sure they could and would issue a postal PCN if you parked illegally.

Council simply states that "Motorbikes are exempt from parking charges in Milton Keynes. Motorcyclists can park for free in all pay and display parking bays, although they are still expected to abide by all other restrictions, e.g. parking only within marked bays (if possible, please park or leave room for more than one motorbike in a single bay), not parking on yellow lines or in resident or disabled bays etc."

I went to Harrogate in a multistory deal. I just called the number on the sign and the bloke on the phone just said,

"Try and park it out of the way and you don't have to pay"

Obviously meaning, try not to take up a space in a busy car park, so I got on the yellow hatchings near a wall

all depends on the local authority etc

in sunderland I tend to either park behind the womans workplace if during the day or in the multi story in the evening as that's also free for bikes (entirely due to the barriers not working for bikes due to weight so have to leave via the pedestrian gap next to it)

Its not illegal as the statute was never put in place, ask a parking warden next time you see one
