I'm off on honeymoon soon and I want to take some underwater pics/vids of among other things, my scrotum floating around in the ocean (anyone know of any water resistant anti wrinkle cream?).

It is likely to get lots of use for 2 weeks and then little if any use from then on... so I don't want to spend loads.

Image quality isn't that important so long as it isn't potato. Being properly waterproof is essential as it will be used whilst snorkelling, not too deep, few metres max.

Any suggestions?

Cheers Thumbs Up .

Last year when we went on honeymoon to Mexico I got one of those plastic wallet things from eBay to hold the Nikon digital compact. The sort where you seal it with velcro and then fold it over to make waterproof (something like this one - click here). Shaped to take zoom lens. Was OK but found it hard to see what I was taking (screen on back of camera). Shutter lag also didn't help as it gave time for the fishes to swim away. Plus I was worried about it leaking.

If I had to do it again I'd probably go for a rigid housing like the Polaroid one - click me.

Best results were from the waterproof disposable cameras. Again hard to actually see what you were pointing it at (little target thing rather than viewfinder). Think I got Kodak ones from amazon.co.uk in a batch of 3 (like these - click me). Might have been Fuji, I forget.

In the end didn't spend too much time on the underwater stuff.

Had looked at them, figured I'd also be worried about it leaking and destroying our half decent above water camera.

I quite like the idea of video too, which rules out the disposables.

It was an all inclusive place between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, aka Riviera Maya. The El Dorado Royale resort if you want to look it up (we stayed in the cheaper side!).

Was nice, bloody mary and/or bucks fizz with breakfast to start the day and then onto the cocktails Very Happy The martini bar was superb. Not that we just drank, the food was good too and we got to swim with dolphins. Some good memories.

I've got a cheap Olympus SW 1050 which is waterproof down to 35 meters is also drop and shock proof. Its a old point and shoot but still good for underwater shots.

Might be worth you getting something similar of ebay cheap waterproof point and shoot.

Very Happy
I'm also going to the Riviera Maya, different hotel though. It does look rather good, particularly looking forward to the all inclusive bar. When booking I had spent ages planning a trip across Europe, posh hotels etc the whole way. By the time I had priced it all up, it was double the price of all inclusive in Mexico/carribean, so I booked that instead Laughing .

I own one. Done a few underwater videos and its not leaked at all.
I'd imagine the negative reviews are from people taking the camera deeper than its designed to go.
Also i have the ZX5 which is better than the ZX3

Reviews I've seen also don't rate the battery life.
That's maybe for long video clips though.
Any comments on battery life.

If I'd looked to buy rather than just use what I'd got I'd be looking at the waterproof Pentax WG-1 type (on price, think they're up to the WG-3 now).

My experience with underwater cameras (having owned three or four of them) is that it doesn't really matter whether the camera is any good or not as there are so many other factors that will ruin your photos.

You can spend a fortune on underwater cameras but the camera itself is usually fairly basic - what you're paying for is a housing that'll stand 50m depth and a powerful flash unit that'll illuminate what you're photographing (light disappears quickly from the red end of the spectrum as you go deeper). If you're snorkelling and only bimbling around in the first 3 metres or so you don't need any of this.

The hardest thing for you will be to hold the camera still enough to get a decent photo when you're forcing your positively bouyant body downwards and dragging a positively bouyant camera with you like a small bag full of ping pong balls.

On scuba I can hang in the water, line up the camera and hold it steady while I get a reasonable photo. I rarely get good pictures when snorkelling because I'm so short on time and there's so much else going on - I'm trying to stop myself popping up like a cork rather than concentrating on the photo.

A camera with a full housing will be more "waterproof" but if you're really only going to be using it in a few metres of water it might be worth risking a "waterproof" unit with no housing because you'll be dragging a much smaller cell of air around with you. A proper camera in a housing will always be fighting with you to get back to the surface.

I don't really need great quality. I'd just like to be able to look at the pics and see a fish, rather than a colourful blur extracted from a dried out salt encrusted SD card.

If you were after something for amateur snorkelling and dicking about in the pool, and were poor, what would you buy?

Then really you want a cheapo 35mm camera rather than a digital one. The delay between pressing the button and the camera actually deciding to take the photo will ensure that the fish has swum out of shot by the time it actually fires.

Personally, I don't trust electrical items that claim to be waterproof. So my first underwater camera was just a generic cheapo camera in a waterproof housing that cost about £50. It clamed to be good for 10m or so and I took it down to 25m where it stopped working but only because the pressure was simultaneously pressing all the buttons - once I got it back up to 10m or so it was fine. The photos, however, were crap.

You'll probably get better results from some of the "ok to 5m" units that have been suggested here because they're designed to take photos underwater rather than being designed to take photos above the surface and then stuck into a waterproof housing. I have no experience of such things though, so I don't know how leaky they may turn out to be.

I appreciate the S70 is now an old camera and can be had for £100 (e.g. from amazon here).
However, housing costs £245 (e.g. see here). Might be one cheaper but as OP appears to want something that'd get used for a couple of weeks and then possibly never be used for years then IMHO a bit OTT.

I would suggest getting one of the waterproof digital mentioned and trying out at local swimming pool. Downside of that is you'd probably be arrested as a pervert. Maybe ask in your local aquarium kit supplier if you could try a camera there?

Did think would local camera club offer advice. Sad thing about those clubs is they can be cliquey and only seem interested if you want to buy the best, as in most expensive, equipment.

That said probably over thinking this. Just go with something that's waterproof and has a decent shutter response (as in lack of shutter lag). If a compact has a 'sport' setting then that might be a clue. Also do a little research of results of various cameras on YouTube?

Yeah, I'm not suggesting Donny buys all that gear for a 2 week holiday. Just illustrating that results may vary. Expectation management rather than genuine help I suppose.

"Cheap underwater camera" and "not potato" don't really go together.

In Donny's position, I'd probably risk the playsport. There's a risk it might leak but even if it did you'd probably get more out of it than I managed with whatever camera it was I used for the first photo up there.

Im going back to the Riviera Maya for my fifth time in September with the Mrs. Stayed in the El Dorado Seaside Suites a couple of times, its much smaller than the Royale but we were planning on going there as its one of the few that does the swim up suites. We will be staying in the Excellence Riviera Cancun this year Thumbs Up

Anyway back on topic. I have a playsport ZX3. I quite like it because its simple and has good results. I have used it snorkelling and above ground in Mexico and on a snowboarding holiday. Ive linked a video from my youtube but remember its been through the youtube potato filter and is only at 480, the camera is capable of much better....

Ive not had a problem with mine leaking. I tend to carry a spare battery with me anyways so thats not been an issue either. Ive also got the kodak floaty thing in case I let go of it. Thumbs Up

That looks spot on villers Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up , exactly the sort of videoing I want to do.

Seeing as you and Map are regulars to the area, any tips on things to do?

Outdoorsy stuff involving trees, architecture/ruins and animals normally does the trick.
