Do you get your gear on line or do you try and buy in a shop ?

Whats better a leather or textile jacket ? how much do you need to spend at a minimum and what brands do you need to be looking for ?

Trousers which are best kevlar, leather, textile ? again how much do you need to spend and which brands do you need to be looking for to get something that will do its job if needed ?

Thx

1) both. where a fitting is not necessary because i'm totally comfortable/confident in the fit and style, i just order online (e.g got my boots online). other things like jackets or trousers, i'd go in-store for a fitting and buy.

2) a. horses for courses, i reckon. wearing leather at the height of summer can be a bit uncomfortable, that's where the textiles come in. but if you're planning on skidding down the track/road then i believe leather is a better alternative for reduced friction.
b. as always with anything, spend what you can afford and keep the old adage in mind "you get what you pay for" - don't expect a set of "Lidl Specials" leathers to be on par with high-end brand name gear. (Disclaimer: no slight on Lidl)
mind you, these days of the internet and all, you get some great discounts.

3) it was only in the last day or two that i was reading about kevlar jeans and the alternatives. i believe kevlar's chemical composition makes it degrade (quicker) after exposure to moisture.
other than that, same as before about leather/textiles in different weather conditions.

Budget? Not too much and not too little something in between something like 100-200 quid for trousers + jacket.

You will be looking at textiles really for all round riding, with your budget is that £100 - £200 for each item, ie, jacket and trousers, if that is the case then you will be able to get decent gear, but if you expect both for that price then second hand would be best.

I would spend as much as you can afford and then some if I was you... Good gear is the most important thing IMO.

If a leather jacket does not say its been treated to be waterproof is it safe to assume it is not ? What happens to leathers when wet ?

Take the below jacket for example is it waterproof or not ?
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Richa-Leather-Motorbike-Motorcycle-Jacket/dp/B00AFVJW1W

So anything less than 100 quid for a jacket or trousers is likely to fall apart the minute it slides down the road right ?

I got some Australian Bikers Gear from ebay, £100 new, for jacket and trousers.

Jacket was not waterproof. I soon replaced it with a HG Cruise Gortex jacket. Not a drop has come through it yet.

The trousers are coming apart at the seams after 1 years use, but keep my legs dry.

I would favor quality used, over new tat if you are on a tight budget.

I got the HG jacket used, HG was selling for 300-400 quid, I got it for £60 and it was like new. Buy locally so you can try the fit first.

I found Gumtree was good in my area.

Second hand on ebay is the way forward. I got my £800 Berik one piece suit (still in original bag, must've been worn once) for £300. I scuffed it up the first time I wore it, but meh.

I also got £500 worth of Wolf 2 piece for £114, as new.

Lots of people buy bike gear, never use it and sell their bikes. This is good for me.

It varies, cheaper stuff will simply get sopping wet in no time.
A good leather jacket will keep you dry through summer showers or shorter damp winter rides though.
And 'what happens next' is similar in that a decent jacket just hung up to dry will be fine but inferior leather will crease up, go stiff and crack

If you go for leathers you'll need a lightweight set of waterproofs to go over them.
These may roll up small enough to keep under the seat on some bikes - or watch the forecasts as to whether you need take them.

Textiles are good in winter but I can't be doing with sweating in them this time of year.

Will echo the ebay advice, especially for leathers.
IMO a lot of stuff from 80s and 90s is better than you can buy new now, and can sometimes be snaffled for peanuts.
