After finally calling it quits on the zxr and selling it on ebay (lost about £550 in the end), I've seen a GPz which the guy will let me have for £300, it does have a problem with the gearbox (when put in gear the back end locks up).

Now do I take a chance this wouldn't be another money pit that will never be quite right? Buy it, (try to) sort it, continue to save the pennies and try selling it when I have a bit of money and hope I don't lose anything on it? Admit that I'm going to be off the road over the summer and just save the pennies to buy something a bit better (hoping to save £1000+, which with the money I have in the bank and selling the zxr I'll have about £650 of already)? Try to fix the engine on the current gpz and live with all its faults for a couple of months?

If it was me I'd spend a little more and get a better bike. They were never that great compared to more modern stuff anyhow and tend to be heavy on chassis parts as well so almost impossible to find a good one or a tank that's not rotted thru etc. go buy yourself an old cbr900 for a grand and have some fun!

Seems like a no brainer to me, £650 can buy you a proper working bike, why would you want another non running project?

For that price, you can have my XJ if you want.

£300 might be a bargain if you're lucky, which you're not.

CaNsA, some nice bikes there.... I'll take that one, that one and.... hmmm.... that one please

bladerunner, quite liking the look of the cbr900, and the insurance is coming back at £236 FC or £157 TPO.... but they are quite expensive bikes from what I can see

Shaft, XJ what? Got any pictures? What's wrong with it?

Rogerborg, I know

I agree that you need to take a step back and look.

You want a fairly trouble free bike. It isn't fun to work on them 24/7 Laughing

If I had a nice dry workshop then it wouldn't bother me in the slightest

How about an aircooled GPZ750? Engine well known to be tough, running gear shared across many different models so parts not hard to find....

It's an XJ650 4KO (classic insurance, saves a fortune) and there's nothing that immediately needs doing, I was using it every day, until I got my XL600 three weeks ago.

Andy, lad, you now know that owning an old bike can be a ballache.

The 1996 HONDA CBR600F is a very good buy.
