Bought a car the other day and it was delivered this morning. It is MOT'd and will be insured as of 00:00 tonight. Tomorrow, if I get it taxed online, can I drive it as soon as I've taxed it even though I don't have a tax disc?

technically no, as your still legally required to display a valid tax disc

however, it should update onto the database as being taxed over night so wont show on ANPR systems as untaxed

they are quick to post it out and usually arrives in under a week, tbh its better to just go to the post office and buy it over the counter

You can drive any car / bike without a tax disc.

If you buy it online then the computer system should flag it as taxed. So any checks done based on the plate (cop car, camera van, whatever) should come back as ok and not stop you.

However, be aware there is an offence of 'failure to display'. This is still on the books despite the move to computers and real-time checking. It allows the likes of traffic wardens (genuine ones, hard to find nowadays) and cops who have stopped you for something else to have a go at you. A 'fine' of £60 iirc and no points. Most bikers get away with it with reasonable cops by carrying the licence in wallet/pocket and explaining it's been nicked in the past. That's harder to get away with with a car.

Depends if you get an electronic copy (printable) of insurance certificate to present at post office. Even then I've had counter jockeys demand an original (checked for paper watermark). Think that's changing now more stuff is bought online though. Otherwise you need to wait for all the paperwork.

If it is taxed, insured, has a valid MOT and registered keeper it will tick all the ANPR boxes. But failing to display the tax disc is an 'offence' I would keep the print out of the transaction in the glove box 'til the tax turns up.

It MIGHT sway a rozzer in to turning a blind eye in the unlikely event of you being pulled up if you can prove you are waiting for the disc in the post. DVLA send them second class so it can take a while to arrive. I think they invite you to pay their masters a bribe of £60 or report you to the DVLA who will then invite you to pay them a bribe.

If you tax online, Shirley, the disk will go to the current registered keeper since DVLA are very unlikely to have changed that yet.

Stupid system and the sooner we do away with the silly bits of paper the better.

Ah yes the Department of Vehicle Levy Administrators, making their own rules since 1972.

Give you the option to buy online, force you into predicament for non display - Hetzer levels, rising, rising.....

edit: why the fuck can they not just get rid of the shitty tax disc system and just put it on fuel ffs

If you insure it at midnight or whatever, don't expect DVLA to notice for a week or 2. My bike is now showing as insured, despite being added Thursday. Wasn't there till today Laughing

great if its someone you know

not so good if you bought the car from 100 or so miles away from a complete stranger
