3rd degree burns

I just found out some really shocking news. One of my really good mates from work yesterday came off his bike around a round a bout. We are still not 100% sure of what happened but from what I’ve herd his bike set on fire which then set him on fire. As he came away from the bike he lay there on fire while the bike went into a parked car and blew both the bike and car up. Luckily his mate was following in his car behind. He immediately got out and put out the fire with his hands as quickly as he could and ripped of his trousers.

Two of my other mates went into see Tom yesterday, he is in intensive care with 3rd degree burns over his face and waist down, and he luckily doesn’t have any internal injuries except a broken wrist. They did not know if he was unconscious or heavily sedated. He also has a 7 hour skin graft operation today. GOOD LUCK TOM.

Tom could have died if it wasn’t for his mate in the car behind. The mate who saved his life came away with burns all over his hands. Tom, for his age and experience was on of the safest riders I know. This shows that no matter how safe a rider you are bad things still happen. I HOPE YOU MAKE A SPEEDY RECOVERY TOM, and that NOTHING else goes wrong for you.

Hope he makes a speedy recovery. There is a guy on MCN Ninjas whom this happened to a week or so back, his ninja blew up from underneath him and he has also suffered severe burns and alot of other injuries when he came off. Thats freaky if its not the same guy and hearing of 2 bikes explode.

Sorry to hear about your mate.
A close friend of mine died in '92 in Germany from burns/damage caused from an exploding car. He'd been travelling across europe on a trike, came upon the scene of an accident (two cars, a volkswagon underneath with something stacked onto the top of it). The driver of the VW was dead, and the top car had started to burn, however there was a child in the back of the VW still alive. Tiny being Tiny decided on the grounds that he was wearing leathers/crashhelmet etc then he'd be better protected then the few other people who where there at this point (no emergency services by then) so proceeded to try and get close enough to get the kid out.

Sadly, it didn't work out.

Glad to hear the guy following your mate had some sense and was quick witted enough to do something. Pass on my regards to him if you see him. Good job

Tom was a very carefull rider. There are 4 of us from work who all ride bikes, 3 of us have had spills in the last month or 2, Tom the safest of the lot has the worst one.

It was a derestricted cagiva planet, (recently derestricted) whether that is anything to do with the accident I don't know.

Apparently a quote from a doctor was "he'll never live a normal life".

I feel so sorry for him, no-one deserves that.

i justed read this, im really feel for tom, hope he feel better soon, plus the skin graft should help to recover from the burns quickly.

ive being in hospital before for 3rd degrees burn to my arms and chest, 1st degree on the the head, i still live a normal life, dont belive every thing the doctor says.

Ouch. By the sound of it there was a petrol leak (maybe the leak even caused him to come off) and a spark set it when he slid on the road. Sounds like a nasty chain of events and to the guy who managed to put the flames out.

I hope the doctor is just being downbeat about his chances, something that they often seem to do.

Just makes you realise how much of a risk just carrying out everyday work/activities is.

A big well done to the guy in the car behind and i hope Tom and the guy in the car behind's burns heal well.

To be honest no-one deserves what has hapened to Tom, but it is even more of a shame when it happens to the sensible/skilled riders.

That guy should of bought a lottery ticket. The odds of the car going up as well are way slim. So he's the victim of improbably odds I guess.

UPDATE:

Finally know that he went round a tight bend and hit a parked car. car and bike still exploaded.


His skin graft opp went ok. He is in a room on his own. But the doctors still say he only has 30% chance of staying alive. Am going to visit him next week.
