I think this could be genuine, could be, not saying it is, but there are people THAT stupid. Just read another article on it which linked to this Twitter account about cycle hatred (a cyclist retweeting tweets about people hating cyclists):

Just watched that interview, she looks like shes dying to smile or laugh all the time, and yeah, it definitely comes across that shes apologising for the tweet, not the accident. the interview on bbc breakfast was pretty poor, now she is claiming to have stopped to check on the cyclist which is very different to her initial tweet.
there are other tweets of hers floating around that she posted while driving.

most importantly though i would happily smash her back doors in. Very Happy

Stupid girl, she's plastered her face all over the news so a quick websearch will let any savvy employer not hire her.

Plus if I remember correctly working in accounts is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. Meaning she will ALWAYS have to declare it and employers are well within their rights to discriminate against her based on this. Plus I reckon the professional bodies won't let her join either.

I'd be happy to have the "road tax" argument with any incompetent, blind, 2-wheeled hating cager. I pay road tax for 2 cars and 2 bikes, therefore their argument is irrelevant. There are so many cagers that are irresponsible cunts. I detest so many of them and see so many examples of awful, inconsiderate and selfish driving every day. Evil or Very Mad

Being a biker is bad enough, but you really take risks with your life if you're a cyclist on the roads nowadays...

The road tax argument doesn't really stand up at all. What about a super-low emission or leccy car that pays zero road tax? By that logic they don't have any right to be on the road.

Second part, I cycle on the road all the time and have yet to witness any horrendous driving that I feel puts me in danger, if anything I'm riding like a nob weaving in and out of traffic etc. If I ever get hurt chances are it will be my fault and not that of others. Maybe its just easier down in the westcountry?

I'm in a similar boat. Reckon it may well have something to do with the fact we both ride motorbikes, and so I used to riding defensively, whereas plenty of the MAMILs behave as if they're in a car? Thinking

A lot of it depends on the day you cycle. I find sunday drivers are really bad. Old drivers are crap full stop to be fair.

Why is it that some people think that this girl should have received a lifelong driving ban and also be de-barred from future employment? She has already received a harsher sentence than most people in less publicised cases receive.
She was involved in a minor incident, which possibly wasn't even her fault. She then, foolishly, made an ill-judged, silly, public comment on the matter.
Why is she public enemy number 1?

Because we aren't allowed to dislike the cyclistas. Anyone who harms one must be roasted. They are saving our carbons and getting fitter at the same time, they are obviously the next human evolutionary step.

Well in the cycling section views are going to be biased, much like the one sided views in 'biker banter' if somebody was to knock a biker off.
Like you say it was a fairly minor accident that would have probably been resolved verbally at the road side, that's if she's bothered to stop. Even after that she could have kept quite and blamed it on panicking and taking off. But in the end she couldn't even do that because she was too busy gloating about it on twitter.

She got a few points and a fine which seems fair enough for the offence but because of her 'exclusive television deal' it will more then likely be paid for her anyway.

Maybe I've seen more coverage of the incident then others as it happened locally and was all over the local news as well as the national. But I kinda got the feeling that deep down she was quite enjoying the attention, even if much of it was negative. In the phone ins it was surprising how many people were phoning in to defend her, cyclists really are that unpopular. Laughing

When will drivers get it into their heads it's NOT 'road tax' it's vehicle tax (Vehicle Excise Duty to be precise), meaning one is charged depending on their choice of vehicle, not for being on the road. That's not to mention that many cyclists already pay VED on other vehicles they own Rolling Eyes

Conversely, when will cyclists get it through their heads that most people couldn't give a shit what it's called, the fact is, there is someone on the road in front of them who is slower, more erratic and completely unpredictable with regard to the rules of the road.

Rather than being pedantic about VED or road tax, how about responding to the real argument? I don't have the slightest issue with cyclists using the road, but if they are going to use it, then obey the same rules as everyone else.

Obey red lights.
Don't undertake.
Be mindful of your vulnerability - physics doesn't care whether you have right of way, but it does make you harder to see.

The big one for me is basic road courtesy. I'm not saying you have to be constantly looking for something to give way to, but nothing irritates more than someone determined to exercise a 'right', regardless of how much it inconveniences everyone else. Don't be a twat on the road, that goes for everyone, not just cyclists.
