PostPosted: 06:48 - 28 May 2013    Post subject: Anyone had problems wearing steel toe caps ? Reply with quote

A few months ago I purchased a pair of boots from eBay the total cost was £5 including postage. They have steel plate in the soles as far as I can tell (used a knife to poke through) and steel toe caps with reinforced heels.

The look like the image below inside them is Bedforn 2604 A (so guessing ex army of some sort).

Anyway I've been wearing them on the bike and my other steelies but just wondered if they are a danger to the foot. Question

Yeah, if your get your foot run over by a tank, the toe cap will crush onto your toe and you'll lose them.

Steel plate in the soles? Bloody hell bet that's comfortable!

Mythbusters did a big experiment on steel toe caps vs non steel. Result was to create enough force to chop through your toes with steelies your foot would be turned to soup without them.

I ordered a pair of Alt-Berg peacekeeper P3 Aquas (still waiting on delivery) that have steel toe caps. Wouldn't think it would cause any issues riding personally...

Can't moan for a fiver. Give them a good coat of cherry black every so often and they'll even stay waterproof for a good while.

Bike boots always used to have a steel plate in the sole for kickstarting. Very Happy

I used to ride in work boots like that all the time - nothing wrong with them IMO. Thumbs Up

Not bad for the price, I personally couldn't get on wearing my work steel toed boots.
Found them far to bulky to shift around the pegs.
But hey that's just me Very Happy

If your foot got run over by a tank you wouldn't have a foot left anyway.

I think that was the point. Wink

Anyway, I've got a pair of aldis - which are comfy and less agro than my others, which are a pair of grinders I've had since the mid '90s.

I wear steel toe all the time, no problem. Hard wearing and safe enough. If that pair falls to peices though, remember they only cost about a quid after postage, so don't judge all steel toe boots by your ones Laughing

Cheers all even though I have been wearing them anyway puts the mind at ease some, to be honest for the £5 they are fully waterproof so far. Although a bit painful because I'm not used to wearing boots and got get some good thick breathable socks.

No Smiler, steel toe cap safety boots are dangerous, what you want instead is a set of dangerous boots, these are much safer. Idiot Rolling Eyes

If you wear boots a lot on the bike, and work in boots etc.

A set of odor eater sole inserts would go a long way in keeping your colleagues and family happy.

They're amazing especially since I spend over 65 hours per week in boots

Mythbusters only tested impact, there may be a case that the caps could dig in if your foot is folded up. Again though, you'd likely lose it anyway under those circumstances, and that's what the steel shank is there to help with.

Or elastic "triathlon" laces.

Yes. If your feet are running out your boots the other end is going to be running out the helmet too.

Got a pair of them Grinders myself, but some crazy 18 eye version from my goth days... Before I got proper motorbike boots I wore them whilst learning, but just couldn't do the gears on the bike, found the toes too big to get under the gear lever, so ended up switched to trainers. Not as protective, but at least I could change gear!
