Check free play at the mid point between front and rear sprockets on the lower run of chain by lifting until you feel resistance. Make sure you turn the rear wheel and check this at all points along the chain and take your measurement from the tightest point you find. The distance between the lowest point and highest point measured from the same place on the chain is the free play.

Check the recommended free play in your owners or service manual.

To adjust, loosen (don't remove) the nut on the rear spindle, loosen the locknuts on the adjusters on both sides and tighten or loosen the adjusters in small increments (quarter turn or so) equally on both sides until you reach the correct free play. Make sure the adjusters are hard against the swingarm. Tighten the spindle nut and check again.

To check rear wheel alignment, use a steel tape measure or something similar and measure the distance between the centre of the swingarm pivot and the centre of the rear spindle. Make sure it's exactly the same on both sides - if it isn't then adjust it again until it is then check your free play again.

The markings on the adjusters on mine are terrible, they are next to useless.

I just use a tape measure and measure how far out the threads of the adjusters stick out the back of the swing arm - when they are both equal the wheel is perfectly aligned.

Thanks for the replies. I took a picture of the rear wheel I just wondered if someone could verify for me as I'm a little stumped with all the terminology - I loosen the nuts on rear wheels spindle (the big bolts) and the. Twist the smaller bolt (on either side) on the end of the swing arm to adjust the chain?

Yep.

Loosen the big nut on the spindle.

Loosen the rearmost of the two nuts on the adjuster on both sides of the bike (the lock nut).
Adjust by turning the nut under the lock nut in small increments equally on each side until you reach the correct amount of free play.

Hold the adjuster nuts with a spanner to prevent them moving and tighten the lock nuts.

Tighten the spindle nut and recheck free play.

Finally, check the back brake adjustment as moving the wheel back will alter it slightly.

Job done. Thumbs Up
