What MightyImp said. And your choice of bike too. 1. It's seen as cool by all the boy racers, who then proceed to wrap it round a lamp post. And 2. It's the sort of bike that thieve's love.

You're young and on one of the fastest 125's that you can legally ride on a CBT. So statistics probably show that you're more likely to crash into somebody as you're new to riding and only have a CBT, you're bikes more likely to be stolen as it's a nice sports bike and you're likely to crash the bike and claim on insurance for a new one.

To reduce your insurance try and select one of the known immobiliser systems on the drop down list if it's reduces your insurance by a lot it may be worth investing in it as it lowers ur insurance and decreases the chance of ur bike being stolen. Also, try not to ride the bike as much, reduce your annual mileage it should reduce your insurance.

When i was 17 my nsr cost £600 for just third party in a locked garage, chained up with no convictions.. You're insurance will get cheaper though, 7months later (now 18) I got a CBF125, same conditions and house as the NSR and it costs me £550 a year for TP Fire and Theft with £300 excess.

Edit: And i was told when you buy insurance in the summer/spring period it's more expensive. That person may be wrong though, it's just what i've been told.

I think this just proves that it's not just your age but also the bike, Perri1996 is younger than you but has a different bike, a CBF (great bike choice btw petri Thumbs Up) and TP Fire & Theft for him is almost the same price as just TP on a R125 for you.

Buy non-plastic-fantastic 125 which can be insured for much less, and goes pretty much the same speed. Win win.

You got a bike that looks fast. They assume that you want to go fast.

Do yourself a favour, get some quotes on(e.g.) a GS500F on the basis of having an A2 license.

Flog the r125 spend the cash saved on DAS. Don't worry that as you get older you will have to do more tests. They will easily be paid for by the money you will save.

They figure that if you are so venal as to be prepared to buy an R125, that new and second hand costs twice the money of something that does the same job, but isn't so pretty; then a fool and thier money are soon parted, and it's only thier duty to get in on the act and help relieve you of it.

In short; you dont buy an R125 because its sensible, ecconimical transport.... which means you are probably not that sensible, and not that minded of ecconomy.

Get a licence, get an ugly big bike, and actually get the performance the R125 doesn't have, and you'll probably pay less for the privilidge.

OR pay up and pose!

I did a few other bikes as well as the YZF. The CBF, CBR, Kymco Pulsar S, Yamaha DT125R to name most of them. I moved the mileage, etc around and it didn't make much difference. Lowest I got to on the YZF was 1,000, 750, 625. The CBR and CBF were pretty much the same.

It's between all I just mentioned; the YZF, DT125R, CBF, CBR and Pulsar S, mainly between the YZF, DT and CBR. I might get my A2 license without ever owning a 125 and then buy a bigger bike instead.

I just don't know what to do.

Absolutely you should do that.

Bear in mind that many underwriters only cover 125s and you might not be able to switch the cover to a bigger bike later. And after 14 days there's no requirement for them to give you a penny back on a cancelled policy and they can hit you with cancellation charges. If you go the 125 route then you should treat those insurance costs as money down the drain that you'll never see again, money that could have been invested in getting a license.

Thing is, if you want an R125 then you don't really want an R125, do you? You want the bikes that it's pretending to be. So why not get one, or at least a reasonable A2 compliant facsimile like a GS500F or a restricted SV650?

I checked some prices for A2 course training and tests. I saw one price at £900 because I have no previous training or experience (apart from CBT) but I also think it included CBT so take 100-125 off of that I guess.

Got 3 day training for £550-£600 (providing 3 days would be enough for me). I would have thought it would be for people who have done CBT, maybe some post CBT training, been out on the road for a little while and are wanting to upgrade. Suppose either way it's pretty much the same price as insurance (less if I only need 3 days) but then I also have an A2 license and can get a bigger bike, just have to wait a tad longer but not really a problem.

Just checked what my insurance would be and it's £1,900 - £1,200 - £700. Ehh...

@ G30 do you have one of those post codes that means insurance insurance companies can arse rape you ?

https://www.motorcarinsuranceuk.co.uk/post-code-ratings.php

and I think "venal" applies to said insurance companies not op.

Yes. Yes, I do. Neutral

The fact I've waited, going to take extra training and are prepared to pay more to be safe (and thus, insurance companies keeping their money) doesn't count for anything, it seems.

I need to obtain my A2 license asap, so in 2 years I can get any bike. It's just whether I get a bigger bike or not. If I get a bigger bike I have to pay more and wait longer. Stay on a 125 is cheaper, get it earlier and I can still get my A license in 2 years. Just means I may not be as satisfied on it after 6 months or so (maybe even before then, although I might not get that bored at all). I would be happy to wait longer to get a bigger "A2 type" bike but the insurance costs are quite a bit more.

Dunno wut to do. :S
1,800+ even with extra training is steep. I'm doing the A2's anyway and the insurance for a 125 is half that. I'd save 1,800+ over 2 yrs being on a 125 plus fuel costs, etc but apparently people get bored with them fairly quickly. If I did get bored I could just get a bigger one, i'd still save money (as the insurance will go down) and have more experience and could start riding sooner.

By those quotes and DAS prices my assumption is your based in Lanndon town like myself.....Wild guess Laughing.

My theory, if you can afford the plastic fantastic yzf125 then you shouldn't be complaining about insurance.

If money was such an issue you would think practically and sensibly and pick up a 'boring' ybr125/cg125 even a XR125 for £1k and insurance will only be a couple hundred at most.

I have thought about getting some cheap, boring and slow (in comparison) bike and save money so I have more for the bike I will get at 21 but commuting is only half the thing I need it for. I want to enjoy my riding and be able to cruise along. Maybe go to some track days. If I got a dirt bike then go off road, that would be sick. I'm going to do motocross anyway, so it sort of fits in, ha. But I have always liked sports bikes and Harley/custom built "chopper" type bikes as well.

I have wanted a bike for so long, I bit the bullet at 16 and didn't get a moped, same at 17 and 18 both for a bike. If I did do it at 17, I could have had a bigger bike by now, right? Then they changed everything... again. If they didn't put the age up from 21 to 24 to get any bike, I would have waited and not taken my A2 tests (or whatever it was back then if it was different, I can't remember) and just done cheaper courses + CBT and stayed on some cheap 125 ready for the big one. If I don't do my A2 tests I can't get one at 21. -.-

It's all a pile of shite.

Oh and I have a few grand to spend, and although saving for the future, etc is in my mind, something is telling me to just do it and enjoy myself.

Edit: Wtf, just did a £900 YBR and insurance is only £50 than on the £2,200ish YZF for comprehensive and £125 cheaper on 3P, but I'd always go for comprehensive.

that's unfortunate.
also 125 have a very bad reputation for bein nicked... I found a heafty price drop when I went from a DT125R to a DRZ400..
so smaller may not be cheaper... Thinking

YZF, CBR, CBF, YBR are like 900
Kawasaki 250r is like 950
GS500r is like 1850...

I guess that's because it's much bigger. Although I would have post CBT training, more safety training and an A2 license as opposed to just a CBT on a little 125 (and A2 license shortly after). It may be bigger and more powerful but for twice as much and roughly the same price (as the YZF), you gotta be kidding me. I'm not paying 1850 for a fucking year for a bike I'm only using to get to a bigger bike in 2 years. Fuck that shit. Guess it looks like I'll be getting a 125 and still paying like twice as much than average.

Hell, I could move to Cornwall, have better cruise roads, less idiots, less traffic, and get much cheaper insurance, and enjoy a place that is like being on holiday in the summer (well, when we actually get a summer), lol. If only.
