So since riding through the city to work I am contemplating changing the GSXR for something like a Suzuki DRZ400 or near to that.

Mainly doing this for the riding style but also think that the SUMO would be great for winter riding too!

My insurance would go down by £200 and also I dont think I am able to ride to the GSXR's potential so may be wasted on me?!

Would I see a better MPG with a supermoto too?

Any cons for changing or pros?

Really considering the change soon so any input would be great.

Cons - Wider bars make filtering harder, SM is too slow outside of town for anything resembling distance work, more effort to commute on a SM, MPG might improve, but you'll have a smaller tank meaning more fuel stops. You'll lose your license due to wheelying away from EVERY set of lights.

Pros - Look and sound like a badass, especially if you fit a fruity race can.

Ok Cheers,

And why does a SUMO make commuting harder?

I have a car so wont be doing distance work. My bike is mainly for commuting and some fun now and then!

Correction... the bars are higher, meaning they go above the cars wingmirrors, making filtering easier. (unless you come across vans and 4x4's).
Other than that, the MPG sucks and long distance sucks.

Wide bars make filtering harder, having to go full throttle everywhere gets wearing if you're not in the mood. Less weather protection if that's a concern to you. Shorter range.

Ok Makes sense.

Would the MPG be worse than my GSXR?

Depends on choice of sumo and whether you like giving it some beans.

I used to get 80 miles to a tank on my TTR on the motorway... was filling up every day to go to work.

Wow every day?! how much was the tank to fill?

I was even thinking of maybe something like a Husky or Husaberg?!

Or shall I just stick with the GSXR?

The SUMo will be worse in every definabble way. Apart from being more fun. And this may wear off pretty quick.

Great as a second bike, as an only bike its hard work. I wouldnt step down to a DRZ400 either. Stick to a KTM or similar otherwise the power drop will be too much.

Don't forget it'll be stolen by the weekend if you leave it outside.

Keep the GSXR.

Buy something fun for weekends or something. I have a monkey bike to piss around on, an R1 for them sunny days and the Vara for commuting. All cost less than the GSXR you have and probably cheaper on insurance too Shocked

I dont have the money to buy another bike.

I am just thinking of ways to keep my costs down, while still riding to work.

Just thought a SUMO might be a way to do this?

KTM Duke II any good or still in the same categories as the rest?

Thanks,

You'll also need to do an engine rebuild every commute.

Not on a DRZ.

DRZ's should do around 60mpg in standard form. Good for around town, but quickly run out of puff. Also extremely likely to be stolen unless you have secure parking.

The way to reduce the cost while still riding in is to ride a bike designed for commuting not for racing in any form. My CBR was very easy to commute on compared to my divvy9 and a the sumo's I come across have even wider bars than I do.

For a speedy commuter I would stick with the gixxer, take the main mirrors off and stick a single bar end mirror on the right and laugh at everybody who can't get through the gaps that you can.

For a cheap commuter you want something designed for the purpose so generally speaking one of the Japanese mid size parallel twins.

Had a couple of KTM sumos and they were pretty heavy on the servicing, tank range was about 70 miles, no weather protection, heavy vibrations, poor speed (acceleration was excellent tho). To name a few issues.

But none of that bothered me as it was a second bike for messing around on, wouldn't fancy commuting on one!

Go and buy an older yam fazer maybe.

This, so that means the courier's favourite. The CB500.

Or an SV650/ER6 if you want something slightly more fruity.

My 690 had a 130 mile range, 3000 mile services & would do 120 with the right gearing and not make a fuss out of it. Not all KTMs are the same. But I would never commute on that bike, the seat was too easy to take off (pull on a cord) and from that a chav could destroy the bike in a matter of seconds.

as a supermoto lover i will be honest with you, a SM is not the way to go with commuting, you may get to work quicker on a SM if you live in the city nice and high up see all the road filtering is piss easy (i even done a cheeky wheelie in traffic). top end speed on SM is not very great, my KTM with my gearing set up top speed is about 100 and its not nice at that speed,

if you really wanted to go SM and use it every day DRZ is the way forward but dont expect to much from it, or if you want go for an SMR or LC4 not EXC like i did Very Happy any high profomace SM will be high maintenance take my EXC for example, every 250 miles is oil change, every 3000 engine rebuild. BUT if you want fun i dont think a superbike will give you as much fun trust me!

Methinks you're trying to have your cake and eat it too.

You need two bikes, a fun one and a commuter. Two bikes is always better than one Cool

You've got a K7 gixxer worth at a guess 4-4.5k.

Try a shit commuter for hundreds and spend the change on decent, older sports bike?
