OH MY GAWWDDDDDDDD Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

The step up from a YBR to an RS is staggering. First over the tank bike and I love it. Scary as he'll driving it home for the first time.

Only thing is when setting off I have to be at high revs, and also, how do you driven normally on one?! Do you keep revs in the power band?

Pics to follow!

I think your spelling mistakes were made by autocorrect.

It's a bloody nightmare - I accidently text my gran "sex tomorrow?" when really I meant today.

Generally two stroked need to be ridden at higher revs, prevents the spark plugs gumming up for a start, on that note I would suggest keeping a spare under your seat. As for the pulling away, again it is a peaky engine compared to a 125 4t so yup you'll need to give it a bit of a bigger twist.

Told'ja, carry a spare and try not to ride with the revs too low. I don't remember much about my 2 stroking days but I do remember it was advised to tailor the sparkplug you use to the type of riding you do. A hotter plug for slower riding IIRC but maybe wait for somebody to confirm.

Run it on very good quality oil, something fully synthetic, or the plating on the barrel won't last 5 minutes. I used to race one, and the minimum quality oil I used was castrol 747. £19 a litre

747 is premix only. Don't buy Castrol 747 unless you're running it premix and it's castor based so isn't so great for a powervalve equiped road bike lump.

Castrol power 1 racing. Around £13 a litre. Use it in my tzr250 and it is fine.

Enjoy.. Thumbs Up

I always had a spare plug under my seat.. just in case. Especially in winter time.

Those bikes like to be revved and they have virtually no power below 6k rpm.

I ride one, although I'll be selling it soon.

Low-end torque is basically nonexistent. Setting off from a stop needs the throttle held at 3k-4k revs and the clutch feathered for the first ten feet or so. Same thing for slow speed riding. It'll wobble and threaten to cut out if the revs are any lower and/or the clutch is dumped too quickly.

Powerbands are really narrow too, lots of shifting about to keep it going at speed.

Don't rush warming it up as well, there's a massive difference when the engine's at 60C and at 70C.

The handling is superb, very effortless. You can just lean it everywhere you want. To be honest, I feel this kinda takes the fun out of it. Learning to throw around a bigger 500cc+ bike is a lot more satisfying (and fun!) in my opinion.

I know you've already bought it and all but if you wanted the two-stroke experience without all the drama and running costs, an older two-stroke commuter might suffice. I had a 1990 Suzuki GP100 that was more reliable, handled well and offered the same two-stroke power surge etc. That thing felt fast without going fast.

Just got home, phone died unfortunately. The guy was helpful and came to have a look, a good 20 mile drive for him. The compression is now so I think it's the rings, will have a see later tonight...

And so the maintenance begins... Confused

I would never buy an Aprilia RS. It seems most people are getting rid of them because they know they're about to blow up.

This one has been well looked after, had the engine's top end rebuilt approx 1700 miles ago, hopefully its just the rings that have gone and they haven't scrapped the barrel. Even though this has happened, I still love the thrill of hitting 7k revs and flying down the private road Laughing

They're the same as any bike. If you only have 40p to spend and buy a shonky, abused shit heap then you deserve everything you get. If you spend the cash on a nice one then they're perfectly fine useable bikes. I've owned two 125s, and two 50s, and they never missed a beat with proper care and maintenance.

Also my RGV did 240, mostly flat out, miles on the may day bank holiday run to Hastings and somehow it didn't blow up.

Top end rebuild 1700 miles ago, if he has used shit rings, then yeah, they could be wrecked.

Buy a top end kit from PJME, they supply decent rings rather than the scrap others sell. It shouldn't have worn then in 1700 miles though. All these people spouting you need synthetic stuff.... my RS was absolutely fine and pulled fantastically on semi synthetic mobil, like £7 a litre.

I'd not buy another though, grenades on wheels.

100% agree. I have only owned two 4T bikes, everything else has been 2T.

I have regularly taken part in 300+ mile rideouts on my 2Ts and never had an issue.

I guess the main thing is that I look after them, don't tune them to within an inch of their life and use good quality oils. I have never, in 20+ years of owning 2Ts seized one and I do ride them as they are supposed to be Wink

Isn't the whole benefit of investing in the 2 stroke Aprilia RS that you can derestrict them? They're meant to generate about 30bhp if you do, isn't that right?

From your description of revving to pull away it sounds like you're on the same kind of power as my 4T 125. If you're keeping it restricted I can't really see the advantage over a 4T, when you take into consideration the maintenance?

An unrestricted RS125 makes something like 30bhp, so that'd be thrice the power of your 4t 125, albeit with the downsides of some routine maintenance.

No, you said "From your description of revving to pull away it sounds like you're on the same kind of power as my 4T 125."

The reason he's revving it to 6k is because that's where the powerband (I think it's a red one on the RS) kicks in. Unlike your 4t, there's bugger all pull outside that band.

To pull away you want 4000rpm minimum. I used to slip the clutch at 5k to get away from lights.

Keep it above 8k for a more fun ride...derestricted of course.

Restricted, use a BR8ES plug.
Derestricted, BR10EG plug.

Make sure its at least 60 degrees before you hammer it over 6-7k rpm. Give it regular thrashings when warm though, I used to ride gently through town, temp got up probably 2 minutes before a country lane, used to thrash the shit out of it down there. 80+ usually. Laughing

I think to get it do 30bhp you need it not only unrestricted but also modified.

Standard RS125 '08 with VHST 28mm carb and unrestricted Arrow exhaust would give you roughly 26bhp and are capable of going 105mph indicated (that's what I had).

To gain extra bhp without extending the bore and cc you need 34mm carb (like pre '05 bikes had as standard), probably modified reeds, piston shape, single ring, dedicated exhaust etc.
