What time is it acceptable to bang?

Not really sure if this is in the right forum or not, but it is bike related in this instance so might be ok in here.

Just wondering what time do you think it is acceptable to make noise at in the mornings or late at night - mainly by hammering?

I work very poor hours (10am - 7pm) and the only time I get to work on my bike is very early in the morning or very late at night. Take this morning for example; I was in the garage before 6am doing a set of wheel bearings as quietly as possible. I should note that the wheel bearings were actually done so the hard and loud repetitive hammering to remove them was already done, but I did require to use of a hammer to put the spindle back in and also to line up the brake calliper.

It was quite light outside which seems to give the impression to me that it is more acceptable, but I had to remind myself that it was still fairly early.

Also last night, I decided against working in the garage after 10pm because I didn't want to disturb the neighbours.

What do you think is the earliest and latest I could get away with?

after 8am and before 10pm. I figure by 8am people's kids are up and around so they will be surrounded by their own noise.

And by 10pm it's getting dark and I figure its no longer socially acceptable

I reckon that a bit of hammering etc should be okay between 8.00 AM and 9.00 PM. Anything outside these times isn't really neighbourly.

What about people with stupidly loud exhausts that have to go to work very early or come home very late.

I used to feel guilty about getting home about 1:30am and leaving the bike running when I opened the garage door etc, OK the exhaust wasn't too loud, but I still always felt a hint of guilt.

Depending on the type of garage you have, a lot of the sound would be muffled I guess

Yup, 8am is generally accepted as the earliest start in civilised realms. Night time is a bit more flexible, I tend to put the angle grinder down after 10pm.

Too early would be my concern... to late is a load of bollocks. There's plenty of activity going on well past 10pm in most places to keep on working. I'd say keep going until someone says something.. when they do, strike up a compromise that your both happy with and then you know where you stand.

It's not like your hammering as hard as you can like a banshee. I bet most people wont even notice.

I work all sorts of hours these days, so I will do stuff at all hours. I used to be polite and keep to the between 8-10 hours, but now don't care as others have kept me awake while I've been on nights. I don't care if your 9-5 Monday to Friday office job is affected by me.

I wouldn't do anything too noisy before 9am. Nothing to noisy after about 10-11pm.
