PostPosted: 14:18 - 31 May 2013    Post subject: Courier Wants NI Number? Reply with quote

Hi,

I've just ordered a tank pad and a seat cowl from Robinsons Foundry Ltd and after a couple of days of paying and supposedly having my order shipped, I get an email asking for my national insurance number. I tried to clarify and the guy confirmed. The courier company is apparently Interlink Express.

I've never ever heard about a courier wanting an NI number, nor can find any examples online. I'm also based in Norway at the moment so wonder if it's something to do with tax? Seems dodgy to me.

Thoughts?

Regards,
Antony.

I've no experience of this but it sounds dodgy to me too. I'd try and get my money back unless they get it to you soon.

Very weird, I wouldn't give them it. Ask them why they even need it?! If they can't respond ask for a refund Thumbs Up

I mentioned I don't really want to give it out and asked why they need it and their response was:

"Hi,

Just spoken to dpd the delivery company for us to ship to you in Norway the need a pdi number or ni number for customs .

Thanks

James"

I've been ordering a lot of stuff for my bike and while they love to charge 30% on everything here I've never had to supply any details like this.

Yeah, thanks. I told them to use another courier like DHL. It's apparently DPD and when I went to their website there wasn't even a visible phone number.

I thought Norway was in the EEA and EFTA, what are you doing paying tax/duty on anything?

Something about Norway and our print company getting something sent back to them because they didn't put some sort of number on the package rings a bell. I can't quite remember what the problem was and the girl who dealt with it has left, but there is definitely something to do with Norway and delivery by courier that requires something (like some sort of code or number) you wouldn't really know about ordinarily.

That must be the most useless bit of info ever, sorry I can't be more specific!

I would honestly be shocked, shocked and amazed, shocked, amazed and somewhat ass-tounded, if they could ever in this whole wide world check if that number was correct or not. If they'd have asked me I'd have said oh sure dude it's NR185171B - which is simply my NI number but with a couple of digits transposed plus another one or two changed completely. But are the company really in any position to cross check the number you supply them with on what could only ever be a vast governmental data base?? Seems unlikely to the point of...blah. You get me. Trollol 'em with a fakey if there's a next time, surely?

Don't give them anything.

Say you were buying this as a business - how would you give them an NI number?

This is an identity theft scam. Tell them to fuck off. Ring DPD UK themselves and ask and they likely tell you the same.

And what the hell has import duty got to do with income tax & NI contributions! ?

I received a letter saying that for some companies it's necessary to provide an NI number or a personal number (Norwegian social security type of number) for Norway. I've never done it before but to be honest it wouldn't surprise me since the Norwegians try to make everything difficult.

As for tax, it's sick over here and the Norwegians will collect 30%+ on anything you buy abroad over a certain amount which used to be £100 odd but I've been sent a bill for my CNC levers, crash bungs, exhaust and probably my seat cowl when I get it.

Back on track, the company might be able to get the package back and send it via DHL though if they don't continue with DPD. Will let you know if I get screwed over - in which case I'll be riding back to the UK to sort it out!

Shit, I just checked out some reviews on DPD: https://www.trustpilot.com/review/www.dpd.com

Seems like a horrible company and no surprise I haven't heard of them.

Sounds very dodgy to me and I would never give that info out unless it's for a job not for a delivery of an item!

It is normal practice in Norway. Your national insurance number is used by the government to track your tax payments or outstanding amounts. It is supposed to be more efficient than asking the PO to collect VAT and duty.

Fair enough, we'll see what happens then. They still have some horrendous reviews out there though.

Hey, I am most definitely NOT defending DPD. They really are that bad.

Every parcel delivery firm on that review site has a bad rating, I don't think that DPD are any worse than any of the others in reality.

Norway is a right pain in the bum and it will be the same as what the UK will be when we leave the EU.

I work in IT and have a number of locations that I deal with in Europe. It is easy to send next day to anywhere in Europe.

But then Norway and it's not in the EU.. Customs declarations etc.

I once drove from Gothenburg in a van and had a right rigmarole at the border. People actually go to Sweden to buy alcohol it's that expensive there. (I actually got searched, not looking for drugs, yup looking for booze).

Back in 2002 I was over in Oslo for a week, even then it was around £7 per pint, I remember a curry for 2 people and 4 beers was £96.

It was also really weird, people would take their rear seats out of their cars and then they wouldn't have to pay as much tax.

Ohh and push bikes had registration plates.

Nothing surprises me in Norway.

Hey,
As has been said Norway is not in the EU.

I found this out last week when i sent some aircraft parts to Stavanger only for it to get stuck in customs due to no invoice.

Cheers,
Shaun R.
