Hi guys. Even though I still haven't passed the test I am just looking into what gear to buy. The other day I had a lesson in torrential rain, I was wearing my goretex walking jacket and goretex leggings but in an hour and a half I was soaked! I thought I would be ok but as my instructor said they are fine for walking in rain but not for riding!

Or should I just learn to deal with the fact that if I wanna ride Im gonna get wet?

No you don't have to accept that you'll always get wet but you will need to invest in some suitable motorcycle clothing.

I'm sure your Goretex walking kit is good stuff but there are many other layers and protection when it comes to motorcycle clothing.

The Best?

Depends on a few factors like cost/finances available to 'waste' on bike gear. Performance can depend on what the individual thinks of as good/bad. Looks/Style.

I use Hein Gericke as I have had excellant wear and performance and looks as far as I am concerned.

I am now looking to upgrade my style to Rukka (Rukka is the German word for when someone rams a Cherry Red Hot poker up your arse i.e. when you pay for an outfit from them you may feel as though you have been thoroughlu Rukka-ed.)
BMW have good gear too. Between HG and Rukka price wise.
Dianese have nice stuff too but I don't think they have the range of styles the others have.

There are many other make much cheaper but you do only get what you pay for. One thing said of Rukka is you buy the outfit and it should last a lifetime. I don't know about that as I believe anything with Gortex has a limited number of wearings. So the more you use it the more stress on the Gortex membrane.
If you lose the membrane you lose waterproofing quality.

Any gear you buy will last much longer if you take good care of it. Don't leave it in a wet heap in the garage. Let it drip dry then hang it somewhere dry.
DOn't hang it over the bike so the exhaust or engine melts it.

I keep my gear on pegs in a room. Zip it all up when hangine to keep the shape.

Wash it once a season in Nikwax.

Any one of these, all can be folded and squished under a seat if its dry and pulled out and put on if it chucks it down.

If it was me, either of the top 3, costs less than buying new gear and quick to store under seat... why buy new gear

Thanks for your help guys. Those suits do look handy, I don't have an awful lot of money to spend on the gear but I do try to buy good quality stuff now. Whereas before I would be like oh I'll get this its cheaper, 2 month later buy the more expensive thing anyway!

I use cheap builders overtrousers and jacket on top of my bike gear. Genuinely waterproof and hard wearing.

I tried on various different types of clothing and found Heine Gericke's TRG Desert Sheltex jacket and pants to be the most comfortable. They have thermal lining which can be removed, vents for the hot weather, and so far have kept me completely dry in the wet.

I have a 2-piece set of waterproofs from Go Outdoors that've never let me down yet.
Their own brand "HiGear Typhoon" overtrousers and jacket. Presumably were originally designed for walkers/hikers etc, but are fine for me.
Also available in a range of leg lengths, so I just bought the trousers slightly longer than I normally would so that they don't ride up when I'm sat on the bike.

Only three things have kept me dry in heavy weather: new waterproof gear, multiple layers of waterproofs, or gore-tex pro shell (membrane bonded to the outer fabric).

The main failing of cheap waterproofs - including Hein Gericke's Sheltex - is the tape used on seams. Goretex gear has a kind of fabric-like tape, the others have a kind of rubber tape that eventually comes unstuck. Depending on stress and stretch, it happens in some areas before others, especially the crotch when straddling a bike. Take a good look at the seams on gear before purchasing - they're usually visible through the back protector insert flap.
