I think you still need TAX Confused but it's legal to ride with no MOT if it is to a pre-booked MOT station.. Smile

yeah mate if its prebooked then its ok to ride ONLY to the garage, once you've got your mot then go get the tax everything done Thumbs Up

you can't get tax with out a mot anyway so it will be legal.
i did this on saturday and picked my bike up monday, got tax straight after and had no problems.

As long as it is pre booked you do not need tax or test to go to the MOT centre. Under certian circumstances you do not even need a registration number.


YOU DO STILL NEED INSURANCE THOUGH.

Does anyone know what the penalty is if you're caught on an un-MOT'ed bike?

I mean if it's got tax and insurance but just no MOT (I'm not the culprit by the way!!)

Well here in Cumbria they are either impounding them (£160 'recovery fee' to get it back) or taking them away to be crushed at the minute (your choice). They are not letting people carry on with their journey if they admit to not having an MOT. So never admit to not having one on the spot, you might have to confess later if they give you a producer but then you have the bike and not them.

If you are a really switched-on cookie, you can then rush the bike to an MOT centre and get a certificate with the same day's date on it. It would take more imagination than the average copper has to go down the MOT station and ask what time it was done at.

EDIT: I couldn't care less if someone has an MOT on their bike, it is your own tough shit if the wheels fall off it and you disappear over a hedge because you were knowingly riding an unroadworthy bike. The only thing that would annoy me is if an insurance company used this as an excuse not to honour a 3rd party claim, which I doubt they would do.

If you get caught with no MOT, you'll probably find small print in your insurance policy that your insurance is also invalid.

Basically you will get a hefty fine, possibly points if the coppers a miserable git. If you cause an accident with the bike, then you are in deep doo doo!

No offence, but having no MOT doesn't mean your bike isn't roadworthy!!!!!!!!!!

In the same way that having an MOT doesn't make your bike roadworthy ..... (obviously not just after passing but you get my point)

I never said it did, but the usual reason for people not getting their bike MOTed and still riding it is that there is something wrong with it they know would be a fail = not roadworthy.

It is one of the few things to do with transport (along with 125cc tax discs) that is not overpriced (at least I have never heard anyone grumbling about the price of their bike MOT).

You practically said it, implied it strongly anyway..

My R6 isn't MOTed... they failed it because I didn't have a reflector, most MOT places just stick one on but nooooooooooo not good enough for them Evil or Very Mad and every time I've gone to re-MOT it since either the tester wasn't there and then my battery got fooked, for MOT you don't actually need a bike that starts on the button but they wouldn't test it Rolling Eyes

New battery fitted so will be MOTed at earliest opportunity.

Don't believe they can get out of paying a claim because the vehicle didn't have an MOT, but you'd still get your claim as the Motor Insurance Bureau payout in the event of an uninsured driver or untraceable driver.

MOT IMO means very little as all it means is that on that day the vehicle was considered road worthy, and they fail for stupid things like no rear reflector, and lots of people change back to their non roadworthy parts like race exhausts when they get home.

I know how you feel. Went to one MOT station and they said and I kid you not,
Them: "All bike exhausts have to be stamped"
Me: "What if you have an older bike?"
Them: "it would have some sort of mark on it, and you have no reflector 'cos you changed yer numberplate"
Me: "You tested this exact bike last year???"
them: "The laws changed now"
me: "forget it Evil or Very Mad "
I went elsewhere and they actually stuck a little round reflector on the back for me. It passed first time. Some MOT stations don't know how to interpret the law.

On this they were (until June this year) correct. The exhaust had to have the legal stamp (BSAU193...) or the original makers stamp, unless it was registered before (I think) the beginning of 1986. It did not mater how quiet it was or whether it really was the original exhaust but from another market where it was not stamped.

Real pain having to change a quiet aftermarket exhaust for a noisier original one just to get through the MOT.

It was later than June. Isn't it now that it's up to the discretion of the tester if it's unmarked? Along the lines of:
" A silencer that is in such a condition OR is of such a type that the noise emitted is clearly in excess of that which would be produced by a similar machine fitted with a standard silencer in average condition "

That is the current rule, but it only changed about June time. Essentially it is up to the MOT testers opinion of the level of noise.

I think your wrong. Any vehicle on the public highway needs to be registered SOMEWHERE with the exception of vehicles on trade plates.

No, you can ride an unregistered bike to an MOT station as long as it is prearranged (the MOT is needed to register it). I have done this with 2 bikes. Many imports are not registered as, for example, in Italy you are taxed if the vehicle is registered so they will unregister them before exporting them.

My dad has ridden a bike with no registration to an MOT too, the police did pull him over, they just called up the MOT station to confirm that he was actually going to the MOT, and said it was fine.

It can be MOT'd on the frame number rather than the registration plate.
