Don't take the Deutsche Romantische Strasse (Romantic Road) as it's just a boring A-road, admittedly with some nice towns enroute e.g. Nordlingen.
Head into the Black Forest instead. Visit the Auto und Technik Museum in Sinsheim and the old town and castle in Heidelburg. Then head up the Rhine Gorge, into the Mosel (Cochem or Bernkastel-Kues for the night) and then head through northern Luxembourg back to Calais |

I can recommend the Hotel Ohm Patt in Boppard on the Rhine (book via Booking.com) as its great value for money, friendly owners and right next to the town centre and the Rhine. Dinner in the Serverous Stuber or Auszeit restaurants washed down with some excellent German beer and wine - sorted |
