Might be fine, might not be - only way you'll tell is to go see it. Mr Yaigis bike was a Cat D write-off, just needed a new chain as it had been sat still for so long, and a bit of TLC. Been riding it over 6 years I think with no problems whatsoever.

EDIT: Cat D is usually just cosmetic damage by the way.

Would Cat D affect insurance in anyway?

Not much if at all. Probably depends on the insurance companies, they all seem to have their own rules on these things. I believe you do need to inform them it was previously a write off though as this lowers the value of the bike. You would think lower bike value = cheaper insurance, you never know!

How would you know? Or I mean, how would they know that you know.

It's their bleedin' system that they charge us money to access. I have no idea if any of my bikes have been written off, and nor do I care, </cvnts and so on>

People need to stop worrying. If you see Cat D its fuck all damage. Buy it and haggle that its damaged previously.

Insurers will probably pay out less than if the bike was spanking new out of a factory, but does it really matter.

Get bike, ride bike.

Fair point; but I have read a few stories of insurance companies refusing to pay out after an accident because the owner had not informed them that the vehicle had previously been a Cat D write off. Mad, I know, cos they should be the people to tell you really. I've always HPI checked every vehicle I am about to buy as my Dad drilled it into me to do so, but other than paying to do that, you wouldn't know, and as it's not a legal requirement for you to do so then yeah, not sure how the insurance companies manage to get away with this shit.

Presumably because people let them get away with it. I would be astonished if that wheeze survived the Ombudsman or a court.

Mind you, I only buy bikes at the disposable end of the scale, so I won't be making a claim for my own benefit anyway. Wink

I had this problem when my step-daughter wanted to buy a Cat-D car.

From memory, Cat-D is an insurance right-off for minor damage, such as cosmetic damage. Cat-C is more significant damage.

Again from memory, you have to inform your insurance company of Cat-C but not of Cat-D. Cat-D shouldn't effect the insurance.

I found out my information on this about a year ago by researching on the internet. So just do a search and believe the reliable sources of information you find. The vehicle should be significantly cheaper than a 'perfect' vehicle however, and I think the seller is required to inform you that it is Cat-D.

As I have said, this is all from memory and it would be best to check it out for yourself, this does not constitute legal advice !! Laughing

But...my daughter is driving around in a perfectly reliable and insurable Cat-D Nissan Micra, which is newer and better than she would've been able to afford if it wasn't Cat-D.

Hope this helps.

ps - an article from the Telegraph.

Says you have to declare it to your insurance company. Probably best to ring them first and ask.

My ZZR was a previous Cat C and I didn't know about it until I wrote it off.

It took me around Europe, around 6000 miles in a month, and was hugely reliable for the year I owned it.

I never declared it as a Cat C because I didn't know when I insured it. The only thing it affected was : I got less money from insurance when I wrote it off because it was a previous cat C.

Also, cat D: Cost of repairs is high enough for the insurance company to think its not economical to repair the bike.

Cat C: Cost of repairs exceeds the market value of the bike once repaired.

That's all there is to it.

Mmm. Note "voluntary agreement".

It's a civil contract, it'll come down to what's reasonable.

You can't tell them something that you don't know. And the thing is, they know, or can very easily find out.

So they say "Oh, no, we're not paying out on that, because you didn't tell us that it was written off," I think the appropriate response would be "No, fuckers, you didn't tell me that it was written off, but I notice that you were happy to take a premium based on the ostensible full value. Ombudsman, now."

If you accept what an insurer tells you, well, I have some puppies in my windowless white van. Would you like to pet them?
