Starting the bike, it will idle extremely low - about 650rpm, and sounds so lumpy, that it is about to stall at any second, however, after 10-15 minutes, after everything has warmed up a bit, the revs sit at about 1500rpm.

Also, applying any sort of choke during this period will cause the bike to stall.

Im far from a carburettor expert, but something in my gut makes me feel all of this isnt right.

Guess who bought a 14 year old bike with a lumpy idle, decided to take it to a main dealer for its full service (@ £60/ph), and just had their bill - £730 ouch.

A: This prat.

Dude.

Anyway. Choke should work. Idle jet blocked? Mixture issue?

@Turkish - I did take it back to the shop, and they did have a look at it - whereas before it was totally f**ked (would not start, would stall when stopped at traffic lights etc) it is now far better, but the choke-cutout issue and seriously lumpy cold idle is still playing on my mind.

I have a feeling the pilot screw has been set to run the idle too rich, but i still need to do a bit more research first.

Possible.

According to this document the default setting for the pilot screw is 1 ⅝ turns out from lightly seated (I am presuming this datum as it is convention but not explicitly stated).

You have the 1999 ZXR400 L9 (UK) model?

I cant speak for the SRAD in particular, but generally speaking access to the carbs requires the tank off, as they are located between the air filter and the intake portion of the engine.
