Right, I bit the bullet and ended up buying some ebay fairings!

Some of you who have seen my bike will know what a well used example it is. In the 4 1/2 years I've owned her, she's let me down many a time. Countless electrical and wiring issues, and other such guff like that means that she owes me more than it's actually worth.

Of course, being a Cat C write-off when I bought her, it meant that selling such a tatty bike with high miles will probably only get me £1400 for a 929 Blade (realistically).

This was how she ought to look like

https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc1/393802_10150584090700712_1037786029_n.jpg

However, after a premature foray into plastidip (I spent £100 worth of that stuff only for it to come out horrendously crap) for which I had to remove all the stickers and decals, she looked bare

https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/r270/575676_10151620698410712_33243974_n.jpg

So seeing that if I were to do a half-arsed job, I might as well do a PROPER half-arsed job.

So the intention was to do a tribute to the late and great Super Sic. If I hardly ever use the bike, it might as well sit pretty in the garage when I'm spannering away on my bicycles other things, especially when I dubbed this up first thing once I moved in.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/9900_10151717154590712_1893752731_n.jpg

So, I have a 44k miler blade with shoddy electrics, battered and bruised body work and a dented tank! What next.

Sent a quick email to neverland-gbp on ebay to see if I can modify the fairings slightly

https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/968954_10151718756340712_1216512817_n.jpg

Who needs photoshop when paint is all you need! Considering I've always been a gresini fan-boy (Gibernau, Elias, Melandri et al), I much preferred the 08-09 scheme from the 800's. I felt the true simoncelli fairings a bit too bland, so it's going to be a hybrid.

Next step was to sort out my red tank with a dent in it. A bit of bodyfiller and primer (sorry for no before shots), I was set

https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/935312_10151717155665712_1232342841_n.jpg

You can just about see the repair on the crown of the tank at the 8 o clock position from the fuel cap. Considering that I'm renown for my bodges and shoddy handywork, I just wanted a white tank no questions asked.

After 2 coats of primer, time to lay down the base coat of Plastikote gloss white. I'm not expecting a colour match with the fairings, but quite happy that it turned out a cooler shade of white than I was expecting. It means that I don't have to go out and spend 15 quid on a barely matching paint mix.

1200 grit and 3 coats later

https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/945712_10151718493320712_2031870517_n.jpg

Now lacquered with decals applied

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/935879_10151718929330712_2071658344_n.jpg

https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/580627_10151718929115712_1858532244_n.jpg

In the process of spraying up fairing infills white!

Tank needs another few coats of lacquer (over the decals) and then stompgrip to be added along with a tank pad.

If you're wondering why I sprayed my cap? I'm planning to get a quick release fuel cap!

My fairings should arrive by the end of the month, so for the time being, it's a case of polishing and tidying odds and sods.

I shall keep you peeps posted

That tank looks great mate, i will upload a few picks of my 'shoddy' painting haha... trust me, my 8 year old could do better! I was going to do Simoncelli Decals on my VFR 400 build but decided against it... Much better suited to a blade! Very Happy

Looking forward to seeing the outcome of this!!

Best of luck Thumbs Up Very Happy

I had to redo the tank. After attempting to apply another coat of lacquer after 72 hours, it started to craze! Using 1200 grit, it looked like a eczema on dry skin. This was with a very light dusting however!

It startes peeling off like a vinyl layer after that! So bitterly disappointed! Sometimes, less is more!

I've redone the tank sans lacquer... Unfortunately the decals were ruined!

So what i've done instead was apply 4 coats of base gloss white with the intention of cutting it back with 2000-3000 grit!

Luckily, i hadn't applied my stomp grips or tank pad by then!

I hope the chinese are fareing better with my fairing (forgive the pun)

oh gutted mate! shame that because the finish looked great on the pics!

The first tank i done was painted in Yellow and was a bitch, I applied a thin layer of paint and thought loads of Lacquer would do the trick, looked like a A-Z Map...

on the up side, spotted these on ebay... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HONDA-WINGS-TANK-LOGO-DECAL-STICKERS-X-2-MANY-COLOURS-FREE-RESIZING-FREEPOST-/261222719450?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item3cd2165fda

Buy one get 1 free... Cheap i know but might be ok... I bought a few for when i finally get painting mine..

EDIT.

Or on the other hand, you could skip this project, sell it how it is and buy this mean machine!! hahah

Yeah... white rim tape! That is all! It mostly gets ragged on B-roads so keeping the wheels a darker colour would be beneficial. Bearing in mind that the bike is WELL USED! Peel back the skin and it's had partial electrical transplants and suspension internals, but fundamentally, there's nothing to hide the fact that it's a 13 year old bike!

At the end of the day, they way I saw it was I'd forked out £120 on plastidip which was a total failure. I wanted the bike in matt white but it just turned out like congealed semen on my sofa! My plastics are past its best with the amount of drops, knocks and spills it's had, so replacement set from breakers would have cost me £250 in reasonable nick... Why not get a scheme you really want!

Prolly not to be honest.

It would be nice, but I wanted the RACE YOUR LIFE decal on the tank OR something relating to my youtube easycore music page.

The reason why I had the bellypan white was to have my music URL's on them and my mate's band.

Tank needs rubbing down with 2000-3000 grit and not lacquering. I've got stomp grips to apply onto it. If i were to have the read cheatline, I'll probably just use red rimtape, but I'll see how it fits on the bike. I'm sure 6-10mm strip would work.

Halfrauds exist for the motorist with low DIY skills, not specialist applications. Your best bet is to go to a paint shop (and I don't mean B&Q)

To be honest, if it the bike had a petcock and disconnect on the fuel line, I'd take the tank off, leave it with a painters for them to either colour match to the fairings (when I receive them) OR for them to apply 2 pack lacquer to it.

But for the time being, no lacquer and 2000-3000 grit will suffice

The tank shouldn't leak it you took it off...

Looking good though, neverland provided me with my fairings, didn't have to pay any taxes on delivery, big box though. 2 panels were damaged as they don't seem to package them too well and 1 hole was slightly too small, quick faff with a drill and it fitted well Thumbs Up

How damaged were the fairings? You got links to your gixxer?

I don't think the tank has a valve or s top onto it i.e. at the bottom of the fuel pump. Not that I tried though, since the other time, I removed the banjo bolt at the injector end and that's when it started pissing everywhere.

But yeah paddy, show me the pics of the damage. (BTW, I've also got a dremel and a spare soldering iron for plastic soldering)

They don't have any tank quick release, so unfortunately if you want to remove the tank you have to drain the fuel.

My tank was loaded with fuel on the GSXR, the pump just didn't let stuff pump through and didn't leak.

I haven't got photos anymore, no idea where they have gone Sad

Basically one of the top corners of the fairing was cracked, repaired it and you couldn't really notice unless you were looking for it. Also all the little infill panels, V section that joins the 2 lowers behind the front wheel, ones near the yokes etc were all scratched to fuck as they didn't wrap them, just popped em all in a bag.

Cost me £329 delivered, got a £150 refund. Thumbs Up

Safe Paddy!

NO way in hell could you get stuff like that in the UK for £170!

Anyway, I've been a busy boy today!

Postman came in with some 2000-3000 grit paper, but more significantly, my quarter turn quick release.

Anybody with a HISS honda key will know now ridiculously expensive things get when you snap your one and only key!

I sanded the paint back to remove the orange peel with 2000-3000 grit, and took another chance with the lacquer, this time outdoors in still, warm air.

Oh, and I painted the fairing infills too.

Results.

A bit of an update,

I'm due to get my fairings tomorrow so I decided to strip the bike down in preparation for it... and got some finishing touches for the tank.

Good luck with that fuel cap. I had the exact same one on my 600 and its an absolute git to get off as there is no hole in it for the vacuum, and if you have a metal tank (like i do) it will dent at the sides and pointy bits. The spring inside is also crap and i couldnt trust it after a few fill ups.

Your bikes going to look fantastic (on the outside) when its done. Cant wait to see finished product.

I've just seen this thread - maybe I should keep my mouth shut......

Taking your advice on the power of MS Paint, I have used this software to point out an error in a sponsor logo. The other side is the right way around (although a poor copy of the logo) but this side has been flipped in a way that this logo has never been.

Sorry to point it out but I hope it helps.

Fuel filler has been fine so far but my first ride after a full tank will reveal how bad the issue with the vacuum would be.

In regards to the logos, well, when you pay half price for a chinese imitation, you might as well lower your expectation. Panels alone are worth £350 unpainted for a pattern part, let alone having the bonus of a reasonably done job... Far better than what i would have been able to achieve at that cost.

Anyway, the bike's always going to be a 30 foot minter, yet a 3 metre minger! I can't disguise the fact that it's got its fair share of battle scars for something that's 13 years old. But the fact that I've spent a load refreshing the chassis, a little bit of plastic surgery wouldn't go amiss.

I have to pay my customs and handling charges before i can fetch it though.

Right, I had to fetch my Hong Kong takeaway and pay the princely sum of £30 to get my items from customs.

So, a picture tells a thousand words and all that!

https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/1010603_10151754219800712_2138605785_n.jpg

Manged to fit it onto the back seat of the celica

https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/1002717_10151754714290712_465018391_n.jpg

Going over the items piece by piece. Bear in mind that these fairings, for £300 fitted my 30 foot minter, 3 minter minger philosophy. As such, because my expectations were lowered, I wasn't dismayed or surprised by their quality.

The decals are applied on as a scaled vinyl presumably, i.e. not even cut out, and then lacquered over.

Examples

https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/1010901_10151754714830712_2035351633_n.jpg

Trial fitment

I used a soldering iron to enlarge the holes and fit in the new rubber rawl plugs. I had to purchase a new set of fasteners on ebay, and so glad I did!

My biggest gripe was the fact that the captive lug nuts moulded into the fairings were the wrong diameter for the existing brackets. Morever, a load of my brackets had siezed. A bit of improvisation with some metallic flexible cable stays (sorry no pics) and I was able to fashion myself a new rear light stay.

Slowly trial fitting onto the bike and fastening. Then I thought, sod it, the sun's still out!
