Many time ive been sat on the motorway in the car stood still as theres been an accident somewhere ahead. a bike filters past. and another. and another. and after an hour, you loose count of how many bikes have gone past whilst you havent moved.

where do they all go?! do police let them thru or is it like a bikers convention at the front line?

Why would you not filter to the front? If there is a 5 mile tail back, then you've got a 5 mile head start when the traffic finally gets moving!

yeah, it ends up like a mini bike meet at the front, depending on the situation people might get off their bikes, usually just sit on them and chat, and then when the all clear is given it's like an old fashioned grand prix start.

The motorway is rarely completely shut and if it is it's not for long, usually they move stuff Abd open 1 lane ASAP to keep traffic moving. The que is normally caused by 3/4 lanes converting to 1.

So through the open lane, or first in line for the open motorway the other side

Or sometimes, if its a really nice police man, he hands out lollipops and because bikes are small lets them through right at the edge of the road and then its a race to finish your lollipop

Once at the front I just get off the bike and push it around to get past whatever is blocking traffic if I can and off I go.

I would expect to get a cop shouting if I tried to push a bike through.

However, they do try and get the motorway re-opened as soon as possible, so generally there will be one lane open.

Also, you can have reasonable confidence that there won't be any cops ahead, or at least those that are will probably be wanting to get back rather than have words with you for their impression of a biker 'making progress' in the now-empty roads.

Me, I'd not risk it.

Especially if it's a case where they've stopped traffic because they need to move vehicles out of the way - doesn't seem fair that you may delay everyone (as for H&S stuff they'll probably have to stop what they're doing while you pass) so that you can get ahead.

I was once "fortunate" enough to be one of the very first cars at the scene of a motorway RTA, and after about half an hour a quite sizeable number of bikers had filtered through to where we front drivers had pulled up.

I would say there was around 20 or 30 riders there - possibly more. Mostly on fully-fared machines, but there were several large cruisers and of course a goodly collection of 500 commuters.

Well, after a little while lids came off, fags were lit, one biker opened a large top box, another was into his panniers and soon enough a blanket had been spread on the hard shoulder and a bikers' picnic was underway!

Once the meagre victuals and viands had been consumed a couple of the more experienced riders provided queueing motorists with an impromptu display of tricks and stunts. There were burnouts, stoppies, and one guy even demonstrated how to turn a bike around on the spot, by spinning it on the side stand. I remember he got a spontaneous and quite genuine round of applause!

Motorists and bobbies alike were entertained by the bikers' antics and it took everyones minds off the RTA victims' harrowing screams as they were cut free from the terrible wreckage just a few yards ahead!

I was on my way somewhere, riding along the A12 near Chelmsford, can't remember why but I had a flask of coffee and sandwiches in my bag.

Traffic had all stopped and I filtered all the way to the front only to find that a car had flipped over onto its roof and the police had stopped every thing from going any further in both directions.

After about 15 minutes I thought bugger it, I might as well have my sandwiches and a cup of coffee (normally all the bikes are frightened they will get the word to go and then it's panic stations trying to get your helmet and gloves on etc).

I was munching and slurping away when they started cutting the door off of the car and I realised how it must have looked to the car drivers, me watching people hurt whilst having a meal and a drink.

I never have any problem filtering. As soon as I see the traffic building to a stop I just move the control lever to put the blade down and give the fucker the beans.

We had a "Traffic Management" 4x4 slowing all traffic down on the M20... filtered to the front etc. About 6 other bikes there, obviously eager to pass as we were doing 40. The road was clear ahead.

About 30 secs passed... we passed a junction, one biker shot off up there but the majority stayed behind this faggot, me included.

Gave it about 30 secs more and 1 biker just flew past... another followed, I followed. Road was empty the whole way home, about 3 or 4 cars on the motorway in total over 3 junctions...

Got nothing through the post so expect we just got away with it.

It may have just been an exercise, but it also may have been someone rescuing, say, an animal from the carriage way.

Or a biker stuck in the central reservation needing to push his bike over to the hard shoulder.
