E-Bay scam?

Hi all.
There have been a few posts about a possible scam when selling bikes. My brother is selling his car and got the following message through E-Bay. Sounds very similar to the guy on the oil rigs mentioned in past posts.
We are treating it as a scam, but can't quite figure out how it works. If a courier comes to pick up your machine and the money has been remitted through Pay Pal, surely that's the end of the matter? This is the message he received. Some of the phrasing does not ring quite true:-


I confirm the receipt of your email and I am glad to know that the car is in good condition.


I have actually tried to get this car earlier but most of the ones I got either had one huge fault or the other while some have even had accidents in the past while the rest were really very exorbitant.



I am actually trying to get this car for my first son who will be adding a year to his age in about 2 weeks. So I think its worth paying whatever the shipping charges will be just to put a laughter on his face.



As to the price, the £2600 seems to be very reasonable. To seal this transaction in earnest, I will be very glad to make the payment asap through my PayPal account as I am currently offshore and I won't definitely be able to make it to my bank to make bank transfer to you.



As to shipping, you need not worry yourself about how the car will get to me in Ireland as I will contact a shipping company here who will handle that.



Do get back to me asap with your PayPal Email address and Full name so that I can remit the payment asap.

Treat everything as a scam until someone turns up with cash, cash only, cold hard cash.

When messages are worded like that it's an obvious scam, clearly not an English speaker.

Messages like "can i buy yer car m8 its well nice" are more normal on ebay These "dear sir or madam i am liking your motor vehicle i will be paying full amount for my son who works on oil rig thanking you for reading plz reply".

Anyone saying buying 'from offshore' = highly suspect straight away.
A legit buyer just would not be doing this as they'd be worried laying out cash.
Also note the curious lack of ability to use online banking.

I refused a sale of my 125 as the guy at first agreed cash but then said he'd send a cheque.

PayPal is probably the most unsafe thing to use if you are a seller...
Even if you send a item recorded delivery and the buyer puts in a claim for a refund they will 99.9% of the time get a refund.

It's a scam, you'll usually find there paying from a company account which if you look into the company is actually folded or something similar

In my experience, something which doesn't seem like good English, in the sense it sounds like its been translated on the Internet, means there either thick as shit or it's some sort of auto message/scam etc

Cash only for anything expensive, or direct bank transfer prior to pick up, that way your never taking a risk

Paypal is biased by some arseholes that got ripped off in a previous life and now side with buyers like its a fucking war

As others have said this is clearly a scam.

I have had similar emails when selling computer bits. when they get hold of my email address they sent me a fake paypal transaction notice - looked legit but logging in to paypal soon proved it wasn't.

In other cases they do sometimes have control of a stolen account and send the money but they can send it by paypal cheque method which can be cancelled within 14 days IIRC or they can just claim it back.

Cash in hand is the only way to go.
