That sucks! Just got mine back on the road for my partner to ride as her first big bike. Hope it turns up and the little bastards get their comeuppance!

Just thought i would share my experience of Merseyside police in regards to this.

So the bike is normally kept in a back alley behind my house, but the entrance was blocked by a parked car (the council said they were going to put yellow lines there about 2 months ago, but nothing yet) so i left it on the road.

Come back a few hours later, its gone. The police took an hour to respond, and were pretty useless (she didnt even know her own email address). They did bugger all about it, as far as i know didnt ask for local cctv footage, ask neighbors etc.

Luckily (or so i thought) the bike was found abandoned, and recovered by the police to a garage about 30 miles away. I later find i'm being charged £150 quid for the privilege of the police finding MY bike and carting it across the city without my consent, which as i am only insured third party i will have to cover.

Forensics took 3 days to finish with the bike (which has had the ignition fucked and is a little smashed up) and know im told if i dont pick it up immediately i will be charged every day its there.

So all in all, this is going to cost me £150 recovery fee, ~£150 to get it fixed, and ~£100 to get it shipped home.

Happy days.

TL;DR This country is a fucking disgrace.

This is what I used when I got my bike nicked (Admittedly it took a while as there was violence involved)

Got it back... well, kinda.

I hate the way police can just recover it and charge you for it, because we don't pay through the arse for everything else Rolling Eyes

haha apologies for the late reply, ive had a mental few days.

Im definitely going to have a look at getting compensation, why i should be greatly out of pocket when im paying road tax, tax on fuel, VAT... What am i paying these taxes for if not a well policed country?

But basically im pretty devastated.

Every time I have had a bike stolen the Met police have asked me if I want to use their service. Did the Mersey police ask you if you wanted to use their service when they called?

Makes you think if its even worth calling the police if a low value bike is stolen. I certainly wouldn't for my KLE, not worth the fees.

I've always been asked if I wanted it recovered in the event that they find my stolen bike by Southampton police. If they haven't asked your permission and it isn't parked dangerously they surely have absolutely no right to remove the vehicle?

I'm sure there must be some kind of contract/extortion law here? You didn't agree to have it put anywhere at all, so you certainly shouldn't have to pay, at all.

When I was in Australia I had my little moped nicked. The police found it and called me immediately, and told me that they could store it at a private impound for one day, after which I would pay a fortune. If I objected, they would have just left the moped outside where they found it. So they told me the info and the ball was in my court.

However, OP, it seems they've gone ahead and fucked around here without keeping you informed. For all they knew, you might be utterly penniless. The police aren't there to profit off victims. In this instance, you are simply a victim and paying for it is nothing to do with you. Their actions have left you out of pocket.

I have no idea how the law stands, but this is the argument I would try to make. There must be loads of avenues you can take to get around this. I personally would play the 'I simply can't afford it, wtf happened, I'm just a victim, I reported the crime and, and.... Crying or Very sad "

Come to think of it.. when my bike was robbed in London, I remember getting a call at 4am to say they'd found it, and they were gonna shfit it to an impound (where I'd pay for the storage), OR I could come right then and collect it. I said I'd collect it, they even sent a copper to pick me up Cool .

So.... my guess is that the police did the wrong thing to the OP in this instance.

Agree'd,

Had a moped stolen from outside my home one time, called the police but they were taking to long so I let my girlfriend handle it, I just went out with some friends, found it a few miles away behind some garages on its side, only found it because the throttle was stuck wide open, the petrol cap had a screw driver stick in it where they tried to remove it to set it alight.

When I'd gotten the bike home, I learned how easy it was to "hotwire" a moped without an immobilizer, just 1 single wire was pulled apart from the ignition and the bike would kick start, no electrics though.

About an hour later the police showed up, bit to late lads.

nope, i was called at around 9pm on the saturday saying we've recovered your bike, its in an impound, at no point was i asked whether i would like to recover it myself, as i certainly would have done.

In this case, it would actually have cost me less money if they hadn't of found the damn thing.

I went to have a look at it yesterday, shes a mess, speedo hub smashed, clutch lever snapped, both front indicators off, ignition drilled, and they'd pried the filler cap off with something. It looks like they fell off it, i hope the fall fucking killed them. I'm just going to let them dispose of it, as it would cost me more to get it home and fixed than it's worth. (especially as i'm being charged 10 pound a fucking day storage charge, if i want it back)

So all in all, due to being a victim of Merseyside Police' shite service, this has cost me a motorbike, and 150 quid. And the scrotes who did it most likely will not get caught.

The worst thing is, being a student, i'm skint, so cant afford another, and i'm moving home to staffordshire for the summer, where i live in the middle of nowhere, and have no chance of getting a job without my own transport.

In fact, i tell a lie, the worst thing is, that this happened 2 weeks after my 2 year 33hp limit lifted, i was planning on going home, selling the honda, working for a few weeks and upgrading to an old GSXR 600. Looks like im going to have to wait another year at least for a higher capacity bike.

And i will certainly be looking into how to get around paying this £150 quid, there's got to be something dodgy going on here.

That is completely crap. Sad

For £150 I'd get it back. It wouldn't cost much to get it road worthy, I'm sure you could find someone on BCF with a van who would help you get it home.

Sadly I'm not local so can't really help.

Police have contracts with recovery firms so they can charge what they want as the customer generally has no say in the matter. The police don't care what the fees are, they just provide the jobs. As long as the company is reliable they'll continue their partnership until a better company pops up. There is such a recovery firm near my grandads business and they recently lost the contract (my grandad had it years and years ago as well) and are struggling now. The lads who do the 24h breakdown thing are usually on decent wages as well so that won't help the high fees.

Yup, but its now 180 quid, as its 10 pound a day storage too. The parts would also cost me ~150 quid, and the bike is only worth about 600 pound. If anyone knows any bikes going dirt cheap, you know where i am Wink

I'm currently doing some research as to where i stand with regards to the involuntary recovery of the bike (and the subsequent charges). If anyone could shed some light on this matter it wuld be greatly appreciated. (Rogerborg im looking at you Wink )

“Merseyside Police always recovers all found stolen vehicles to a secure
location by an approved Recovery Operator for which a statutory recovery
fee will be payable. The vehicle may require a forensic examination and
upon completion you will be notified of its whereabouts to arrange
collection”.

So i have no choice it seems.

It's a money spinner, plain and simple, a mate of mine had his Reliant tipped onto it's roof maybe 50 meters from his house, it got rolled into the road and thus became an obstruction and the police got called. Rather than just roll it back and contact him or even leave a note on it, the police had it recovered from right outside his own house Neutral

Unbelievable if you ask me.
