Hey guys,

Recently I've been contemplating a super for a number of reasons mostly due to lack of speed compared to a 600 and wheelie good fun. Although they might seem like a good idea to chill me out, I'm not very tall and I know nothing about SM's so i need to actually research into the possibility of owning one, what it means to own one, how much for one suitable for me and of course legal requirements.

I'm around 5'6", with tiny legs for size limitations, and I'm not really after race spec models. something fairly usable day to day. Maybe even in the starter range? I'm not to sure but I obviously won't learn fuck all unless I ask people who do know.

Thanks,
Ben

DRZ 400s are fairly forgiving and don't have to be maintained anywhere near as much as race bikes, you can get lowering linkage kits as well as lowered seats to suit your size.

They have tons of spares and upgrades for them too.

DRZ400SM if you don't mind being a little down on power. My TT600R was about the same really when you factor in weight, it was fun enough. It was tall though, the DRZ as said can be lowered a little.

There are some that need insanely quick oil changes, there are some that don't. Depending how much time you want to ride/service the thing... I'd think before dropping cash on one.

I have been looking at the KTM 625 SMC recently, they seem to come up quite often and don't seem "too bad" on the up keep costs etc. Ideally I'd want a 640/690 but budgets. Laughing

Like tuffers said the DRZ400SM sounds about right for what you want. Not the fastest or lightest supermotos but still fun to be had and lots of aftermarket stuff for them too.

At that height you might need to lower the bike a bit, they are not really friendly for people under 6 foot.

DRZs are great for a first supermoto, but they tend to be quite over priced as they're very popular. Other bikes to consider: WR250X or Honda XR 650 (not sure if they're supermoto as standard).

You'll be less likely to get caught speeding on a sumo but more likely to get caught wheelying or doing stoppies Razz plus kerb jumping... bit of off roading... hmm.

The CCM R30 is quite a reasonable SM bike, especially if it has a 715cc big bore piston fitted

Im 5'6 and a half and i have just got a RMZ 125. Ok only a 125 but im posting because of the ride height. My bike has not been lowerd and im finding it ok. I cant get both feet flat but i can pretty much get one foot flat. I dont think your height will be an issue. But then if your getting a bigger bike i dont know, my 125 only weighs about 150kg.

150KG for a 125 Shocked a DRZ 400 is 140KG and considered heavy. I didn't realise how nice it was to have a light bike until my dad gave me his old KLE. I miss being able to man handle the bike around, I can't even lift the back of this one to move it around. With my KTM or DRZ it was extremely easy so this KLE must be at least 180KG.

if you want a less competative machine at reasonable low cost look for something along the lines of.

xr400,drz400, ccm c30, wr400,

the xr and the wr are both kickstart so if you plan on doing alot of road use and have short legs maybe not the best option,

if you want something more racey look at these

ktm 625,640 ect, huskys and yam wr426s things like that but i wouldnt advis it for what you want

ideally you want to keep the servises down using it on the road price wise i mean so even an xr650 supermoto or xt660 should be good but i could see a supermoto getting boring very quickly especially if you go out with lads on sports bike it will be fine on short tight twisty roads but anything else youl be full throttle everywhere.

My old enduro race bike has become a favourite since buying the KTM and fitting SM wheels to the XR400

I agree with the previous post about my XR about being next to useless against a sportsbike. But then that is not what it is for.I tend to ride with other like minded people

I've got a CCM644 with both enduro and SM wheels and being a shorter chap at 5'6" I can ride the SM fine but it can sometimes be a struggle getting my leg over it with overtrousers etc on, its a complete mare on the enduro wheels, that extra 1" height makes a difference.

I have the same worry, in 4 months time i want to get a drz 400sm (when i'm older enough to do my A2 license) and i'm 5'9 with what i'd describe as average length legs for my height and i'm a bit worried about it being to high for me.

I actually found mine to be lacking compared to my drz-e which I had back to back. Also found it better than paddys TTR.

If you can, I'd recommend a husky te610. Mine did shit it's coolant out everywhere and do a head gasket, but I seem to recall you did an apprenticeship or something at a garage. Presuming it and you aren't worthless a medium level of maintenance won't be a problem.

On a personal note, Irn Bru, you big wuss, I could manhandle my rf900 about by lifting the rear and swinging it on the front wheel.

TUG, I would have thought you were taller by the big bollocks you used to give on here, but you should be fine riding most supermotos. Theres a guy around here on a standard height CRF450 sm who isn't much bigger than 5'5.

napoleon syndrome! Laughing

Just cos I used to fight back a bit doesn't really mean I can't hack abuse and or maintain a bike, besides I've calmed down since then. I just want something that doesn't need rebuilding every 2 hours use and I can fit on, barely asking much.

Oh and I lift now, barely, but still counts! Wink Laughing
