Okay - one of the kids wants a mongoose like her big sister's. Fair dos. But now that I look at these bmx bikes and similar, how come they've all got such diddy front sprockets?? They were never like that in my day. Just normal sized. What gives??

What is that on the chain near the back wheel that looks like a derailleur? I'm guessing it's a single speed bike. Kinda looks like it's there to keep the chain tense but couldn't it just have a shorter chain?

This ^^^

It's called a singleator and it's used to keep the chain tension because that bike wasn't designed to be a single speed. It has vertical dropouts so there is no way to move the back wheel back and forth to tension the chain. I finally managed to squeeze in another half-link on the chain so it's less necessary now.

Is that for cycling up the sides of buildings? Man, I would love to see you pedalling that down the road. Do your knees exceed C? Laughing

I worked out that when mountain biking, you are either slogging up a hill or rolling down one.

With 1.75 x 29" wheels pumped up reasonably hard, I often roll past people on standard mountain bikes who are having to pedal.

It goes over boulders pretty well too. I'm learning to tackle slabs, ground clarance is not an issue.

I had a short blast on a mates On One Inbred 29er due to playing musical bikes at Coed Y Brenin...thought my 456 was good..
When those 29 inch wheels get up to speed its a hoot Very Happy

I did the Minor-Tor run at Coed-y-Brennin on my single speed, 1973 Puch road bike with this exact setup and gearing. I also overtook a few people on it. Only has 27" wheels though.

It's what inspired me to make the bike I have now. Essentially a supersize BMX.
