I had planned to sort my carbs out (for the first time) when I had a weekend or two to myself, but that moment seems to have come sooner rather than later as the situation has gotten worse.

I plan to remove them and basically give them a thorough clean, and reset everything to 'factory spec'.

Ive just been outside and taken a video of the bike in action (or should that be in-action). If anyone has any specific pointers on the likely culprit then that would be appreciated, if not no worries.

I'm no expert by any stretch Embarassed but to me it sounds like it is being starved of fuel??

Have you checked fuel lines and tank? I say tank as mine sounds like it has a sand pit hidden inside Laughing
If your tank sounds "sandy" when shaken, try running it without the tank (bodge some make shift direct feed for the petrol) and see if it runs any better.

A confusing update -
I put half a bottle of redex into the tank after I took the video, ran it for 2 x 5 minute idle sessions (blipping the throttle whenever they fell into the lumpy sub 1000 range).

Left it for an hour, came back, thought sod this Im going for a ride to see if she's the same and oddly as you like it ran fine for the whole 40 minute jaunt.

Bloody bikes Rolling Eyes

It had almost a full tank, a mere one week old, and I cant believe something like redex could 'fix' it so dramatically so i'll just have to wait and see.

Having the same issue with mine, carbs need cleaned I think. Redex did sweet fuck all to help but for 2 quid it was worth a bash.

If the problem comes back, give the bowls and pilot jets a clean - don't forget to check the float heights whilst you're there.

If no better after that, try connecting a fuel source directly to the carbs (missing out the pump). If it runs fine then, it's either the fuel pump (rare they go) or the pump relay (less rare to go)

Yep im quite keen to see what the pilot jets are like.

Regarding float heights, are you thinking the bike isnt getting enough fuel? As it actually runs very well when in the high rev range - would this rule them out? (sorry if that sounds dumb, still learning)

I'm no expert but as far as I am aware, correct float height is the basis for good carb tuning. If the heights aren't right, then nothing else will be 100%.

From the video, the bike struggles to start which suggests to me either poor fuel delivery or lean mixture (possibly partially blocked pilots). Then the bike stalls out after a while which again points to fuel delivery problems. However, you state that it runs well at higher revs which then suggests that it gets enough fuel and points to the pilot jets.

Carbs get blamed a lot when the fault can lay elsewhere. Fixed a mates bike that was starting ok but then running crap, he was convinced it was the carbs but they were fine, traced it all back and found a dodgy relay at fault. One of my own bikes would only run for 10mins at a time when riding but would idle all day long - that was down to a pinched fuel pipe.

As long as you're methodical and careful (make notes of where things are/set so you can return to that postion if necessary), a clean out should at least improve things. It also boosts your confidence when you know your bike that bit better Smile
