Got a 750 honda shadow black spirit with two silver tail custom exhaust pipes. Bike rides great, but the exhausts seem really quiet. Had a go removing the baffles and the volume level is terrifying! Any advice on what to try? Put baffles back in and happy enough, but obviously want more sound. Fed up watching other cruisers disappear and still hearing them two minutes later, while mine turns a corner and you hear nothing. Any help would be hot. Confused
(Bearing in mind I still want a legal bike and to pass my MOT!)

Rev it like a mad man, and always ride in a lower gear than you need?

Shorten the baffle or make the hole in the end bigger.

The baffle is covered in heat wrap ( looks like carpet underlay). Reckon removing that will help any?think its been put on to make it quieter.

Yep, whip that off and it'll be a bit louder as long as it doesn't rattle Smile

Would be the best is to change the pipe with other aftermarket brands. Removing the baffles may decrease the back pressure.

Don't wish to be glib about it but as far as I know, four strokes don't need back pressure. A four stroke exhaust is just a vessel to carry the exhaust gases away (and noise reduction).

If the OP remains with the stock pipe and fettled baffles, he may be ok to just run like that. If he goes down the aftermarket route, then 9 times out of 10, he'll need to re-jet to compensate.

Can't you just drill more holes in the baffle's to make it louder?

A certain amount of back pressure on a four stroke is beneficial as it improves low/mid range power. A straight pipe only increases high range rpm power.

Removing the exhaust packing will indeed make it louder, you may even notice it having a little bit extra oomph.

A less restrictive system will almost always produce more power and noise than a restricted one, but not always in a beneficial manner...

I recently took the baffle out on my bike and the Dyno showed a loss of 11% torque down the lower end of the rev range.
This equated to 42-58mph in top gear along with a loss of 5 miles per gallon.

On the upside I had more power available where I didn't need it,
managed to annoy all my neighbours whenever I started the bike up in the morning,
almost issued with a Section59 PRA notice and nearly always ended up with a nasty headache after a taking the bike out for any length of time.

Baffle back in and staying in.

You need to set the baffle to level you want. Either bang a hole down the middle of each pipe or take out the baffle, modify the end and refit. Do a bit at a time untill you get the sound you want. Be in control of your pipes, not the other way around! Tip: make the pipes slightly quieter than you initially think is right. They will get slightly louder over time and will annoy you slightly more than you think. Take it from one who's been there! If you only remove part of the baffle plate, you should retain most of your backpressure. If you want it quieter later, you can wind some baffle packing round and secure with bound wire. Simple!
