Ducati 748

I am (hopefully) going to get a 748 (in yellow ) for my 19th and was wondering what they are like?? It is my dream bike and i want it now!!!

I know they are roughly the same size as my current gsxr400 and apparently handle like nothing else on this world. Can anybody compare it to my current bike. 1991 gsxr400 RRSP. Please don't anybody say it will break down more because it cannot be possible my current bike = breakdown every 2.17 days

i will have finished my 2 year restriction on my 19th so full power and my birthdays in May so good weather aswell (touch wood)

Nice bike though, Viper on here has one, but she's rarely around any more.

I've owned a couple of GSXR400s and I've ridden my mate's Duke 748. Size wise it's very small (and narrow) so you shouldn't have any troubles there.

The power delivery will feel completely different. GSXR400s are renowned for been quite "two-strokey" in that you have to rev the nuts off them to get the best power, and the 748 is the opposite (being a twin). You'll get a big grunt from low revs and then it kind of levels out.

The handling felt strange when I first rode it, but I think that's just its character and something you get used to. I emphasise strange, and not bad - just different.

But above all else - watch the bloody side stand! I nearly dropped his 748. Pulled up after the ride, flicked the stand down as I normally do. Went to put the weight of the bike on it and the stand flicked straight back up! I half fell over the bike as I wasn't expecting it, planted me knee on the floor and hauled the thing back up... all the while shitting myself that I was going to drop my mate's bike! Anyway, the side stands are sprung, so they don't stay down on their own. I think they changed it on later models (his is an S reg) but be careful anyway!

My brother in law has one. During the week he uses a Bandit so the 748 only gets used at weekends. He got his new and it has been back a few times to fix a few faults under warranty but it does have problems in wet weather. Electrical problems or misfires which of course never happen when its back at the dealers so they have problems fixing it.

He swears by his one piece toolkit, a small can of WD40.

I had it for a couple of days this summer while he was away and my ZX6 was off the road.
What can I say, handles fantastic with more than enough poke on the twisties but gets kind of outperformed by the current crop of Jap 600's when things straighten up a bit. But that exhaust sound is something else, if only it also had the intake roar of the ZX6

If i had the money and didnt need to commute I would love one especially the Senna version or the NEW black one.

Compared to a sports 600 of a similar age it doesn't offer many advantages. It does have a slightly bigger range of torque, but is revvy compared to bigger twins. The handling is definitely like other bikes out there... the 916 for a start I suspect . It may be a bit better than other bikes from eight years ago or so as far as handling goes, but not not justified by the price difference.
While it is known for being 'stable' it does means it doesn't turn in so fast.

As it costs a fair bit more that bigger bikes, it's the image you're paying for.
If the image is worth the extra thousand pounds or two for you, then go for it.

Sorry, that's not really what you asked.
In comparison to your old bike it will feel *fast*; same for most 600 class bikes though.

got to say i really like the look of the 748, infact I already have my mind set that it'll be my next bike, however I seen one in the flesh the other day and from the sides etc it looks gorgous but from straight on either the front or the back it looks really narrow/skiny, iam not 100% if I really like it.

6,000m £275 inc parts and labour
12,000m £375 inc parts and labour

It should have a complete top engine rebuild at 15,000m+ I'd keep about £400 for that. If you're purchasing one above those miles checks its been done.

Personally I wouldn't want an unreliable, expensive bike outside, miles away from home and it would cost so much if anything went wrong.

Also I don’t know if I could use a bike like that everyday, all year round.

Ah who am I kidding i'm just very jealous . Just have your deep pockets at the ready when something goes wrong.
