PostPosted: 13:09 - 10 Jun 2013    Post subject: Rolling back the odometer Reply with quote

I just bought a second hand speedo for my bike as the other one had cracked glass and kept jumping about. My bikes done 19,000 genuine miles but the new odometer has 93k on it!

The law says that an odometer shouldn't be changed to fool people into thinking it's a low mileage bike, but I just don't want to have my bike saying 93k when it's done nowhere near that.

Is this possible / illegal?

I wouldn't worry about the legal side at all, all you are doing is putting the mileage to what it should be, if I was in your situation I would do it without hesitation.

I'm sure it's possible, but I don't know how to do it so I will shut up now. Very Happy

I know someone who done it, didn't say exactly how though, but he did say something about turning back the first number with a screwdriver. When I seen the mileage I would never have guessed anything had been done (unlike some where the numbers are all over the place).

Quick edit:

I was told that an electric drill would burn out before getting all the way round the clock and back to a decent mileage... not sure if that's true or not

Don't bother hooking up a speedo cable to a drill, you can't go in reverse and forwards takes far too long. Remove the plastic lens and use your nails/screwdriver to roll the digits back manually. Be sure to glue it back together properly though.

Just take a piccy of both when you're fitting it, and when you sell it give the new owner the old speedo.

Ye that drill thing is a myth, lets say the drill could reverse it at " 100mph " , it would take about 40 days to wind it all back.

I took mine apart and used a small flat head screw driver to spin them round, be careful not to nick them at all, I accidentally dented one of the numbers and it was noticeable.

I wonder how many 'requests for information' Kornski will get from this thread about you all admitting to clocking your bikes.

Is it clocking though? **** If you're matching up new and old speedos and providing you tell the person who ends up with the bike, everybody's happy. I "may have got some clocks in measured in miles that matched up with the kilometres clocks" and this'll tally up with the MOT anyway. I put about 6k on this year and the last MOT cert says odo in km, this time it'll be odo in miles

EDIT **** Only because I'm sure nobody would pass it off without telling the potential buyer. I would. I'd be glad to know someone went through the effort of getting some clocks in £s rather than Euros

the rozzers don't let the facts get in the way of a good old-fashioned internet witch-hunt.

If they swim in water, burn 'em.

I believe the official phrase that's legal to use is "mileage correction". Which is what it is in this instance. Razz

I didn't bother changing the miles on my clocks, (not sure the exact dates but the time line is about right anyway).

21/6/2011: Mot shows mileage at 00009
28/01/13: Mot shows mileage at 68,800

When I took it for the mot I explained I had changed the clocks over and that the previous only had 9 miles, he said he has to go with what is shown.

Now the bike has been sold (for scrap value) and is suddenly showing with 28,000 miles

My speedo needs 4480 revs of the cable per mile. Assuming you can wind forward from 93k to 19k, that's 26,000 miles you'd need to clock. A Dremel can hit 35,000rpm, so you could clock at a rate of 7.8125 miles a minute (468.75mph), meaning it would take 55.46 hours.

Winding back from 93k to 19k is 74,000 miles however, so would need 157.87 hours, or just over 6.5 days.

(It's lunchtime, I'm bored.)

I've never taken apart a speedo so I have no idea how it's mechanically put together, but surely driving it at hundreds of times its design speed for days would bugger something up?

I could be completely wrong in which case this statement should be ignored.

At least some newer ones do not allow rewinding. They were designed not to be spun backwards.

Only ever seen it on old old clocks.

Also, sawdust helps the engine run smooth for the first few miles. Wink
