 |
|
Hi,
Apparently no-one can supply a top box rack for my bike, which is one of probably only three or four in the country. I've spoken to Gutsibits - a specialist parts supplier for Moto Guzzi, and they tell me that they don't know of a rack that fits my bike.
This delays my plans to join up with a local charity called Blood Bikes, who stipulate that a rack is obligatory due to regulations carrying blood products and the like. Plus I'd like to fit a top box anyway for the practicality side of things.
So, I was wondering if anyone has come across a similar problem with their bike, and found a solution? I'm sure I could modify an existing rack and mount it by drilling through the grab rail, but if there is an alternative I would be glad to hear of it.
I've attached a photo of my grab rail to help anyone with suggestions, plus a pic I found of someone with an identical bike who has managed it - or maybe it was an available accessory back in the day....

Any help gratefully appreciated!

If you buy one of those racks I linked to, you can have it sorted by the weekend. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

These guys don't need a topbox, just a seriously rockin' riff!

Seems strange though that a top box would suffice for carrying blood products in an audit sense, the vans at the bloodbank where I work that carry blood products are all on contronics and temperature mapped to ensure that they never stray out of accepted levels. ____________________ Current: '05 CBR600F - Previous: '01 GSF600S Bandit, '06 XR125 |

What can I say, they list the same part for Super Dreams and the old big Zeds and I own both; looking at a tape measure, I'd be surprised if there wasn't more than a 10cm difference between the upper shock mount widths.
The key bit is the rear mounts, which will have to match up to your indicator brackets; that universal rack has sliding rear mounts, with multiple bolt holes in the fixing strap, so you'd have to be pretty unlucky if it couldn't be made to fit. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

Update
I bought a rack from a breakers yard, and it's a surprisingly close fit. I just need to make four small brackets to match up to mounting points on my bike, and....this is the bit I'm inexperienced in.....bend the main top tube in slightly...
On the top u-shaped tube I need to reduce the gap between the two mounting points from 34cm to 28 cm. I've been doing a bit of googling and come up with a method of filling it with dry sand, plugging both ends, and heating before slowly bending.
I really don't want to make a mess of this, and would appreciate anyone's experienced input before I have a go. The tubing is 19mm outer diameter with 2mm thickness. I'm not overly concerned about discolouration of the paint as I'll be having it powder coated afterwards, or maybe Hammerite it myself.
Please feel free to shoot me down in flames if I'm heading for a bodge!

I've got a complete ventura rack setup for my R6 that you're more than welcome to as long as you can collect it. Maybe you could fudge it on there. ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. I ride for bloodbikes and use the charity's own fleet, atm thats st1300's fully livered up (ex police) . The bikes have bespoke racks made and fitted to the bikes these are mounted to the subframe over the passenger seat (as they never carry passengers) Blood or plasma etc is supplied by the blood banks in there industry standard temperature controlled boxes which are in turn in a weatherproof carry, some blood bike groups do use there own vehicles (ours does not) and so have racks fitted, these are needed as you cannot open or transfer any contents of a sealed box at all so you need to be able to transport the boxes. there are times when panniers are fine to use depending on what you are transporting, we transport blood, plasma, samples, equipment, donor milk etc etc.

| sickpup wrote: | From a professional point of view too many people get into the blood running because they think it makes them a hero, it doesn't. After speaking with one group they didn't even know what a Major Hemorrhage was, still hadn't done a single blood delivery after a year but were often seen out riding in formation on their marked up bikes. |
I first noticed Blood Bikes after a piece on the TV saying how they helped in getting blood and other urgent products like breast milk, plus patient notes, to a hospital on a voluntary basis. It has not crossed my mind that they might be heroes, or that people might think I was trying to be one if I joined up. The group I am joining, and note I haven't been accepted yet, has done over 1000 runs. I don't know or even care really if it's blood or anything else that has been transported in those thousand plus runs. Why would a courier need to know what a major haemorrhage was or even how to spell it?
My understanding is that voluntary blood bike charities are providing a service to the NHS, and in doing so are releasing funds in a small way, to be used in other areas of patient care. I know you could argue that more is wasted in the NHS, but surely if some groups - registered charities mind - are helping in their way, and their actions help save lives, then where is the harm in that? That is why I am interested and have applied to join.
I've not yet heard or seen quoted a blood biker trying to make out that he or she is a hero, or that they single-handedly saved a patients life. They don't profess to be doctors, nurses or paramedics. I'm not sure I understand why you would show prejudice against the whole country's blood bikers when you have met one group. Maybe when I've been riding with them for a year or two I might be able to offer an opinion based on experience, but for now all I can speak about is what I've learned so far, and what I expect to be the case.
Perhaps when they've "often been seen out riding in formation" they were conducting training? ____________________ Currently Moto Guzzi 750 Strada, Moto Guzzi V35 Florida, previously Honda CB125T, RD250LC, RD80MX |

"I made one of the most important ScotsERVS Runs to date-a 150mile bluelight dash to save a kids life."
Don't get me wrong, that was great work - note the reply from our own "trikeschick". I present it purely for information. Note that the Scottish Emergency Rider Volunteer Service really have been blessed as "emergency vehicles" and are blue-lit. I may even throw some coppers in their can at the weekend.
I appreciate the intent and the results of blood biking, although I do have to wonder if volunteers are discouraging the NHS from employing professionals. Personally I think that they should. I'm sure I could afford that extra 50p or so a year of tax money.
Props for doing it on a Guzzi, that ought to raise some eyebrows. You know what I'd really love to see though? Someone doing it on one of these:

Pick up sealed box at A, take to B, don't crash, don't tuck into the breast milk. You don't need a battenburged Pan Euro, blue lights or pseudo-paramedic get up, and you don't even have to deal with pissed up chavs calling you out to the industrial estate to mug you for the takings. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
