right, let me set the scene.....

was talking to my Mrs uncle t'other week an he was skitting me for riding a CG, he reckons i look like a gorilla on a monkey bike (im 6ft 2 an 17 stone)

he then mentions his brother has a bandit that hasnt been used in years an would probably sell it for £50 Shocked

so i phoned the brother last night, he said its an S reg unfaired bandit in turquoisey blue, last on the road about 3 years ago an has lived in his garage ever since

im going up to see it on Saturday, im told the collectors rust to bugger but besides that, Bandits are pretty much bombproof

surely i cant go wrong for £100

so....after all of that, what do i do with a bike that has stood for 3 years, obviously change oil, clean carbs out, change battery etc

anything else?

thanks (sorry for the mahoosive post)

change coolant too and petrol, any petrol still in it will be useless.

Probably look over any hoses for cracking and check the tyres for cracking also.

then try and fire it up and see what happens

I had a Bandit that had sat for 2 years... Laughing

It was not good at all. It was the later one, it was running fine before laying but, but after I picked it up and got it running it started to get really ill, really fast.

Change battery, sort collector, probably want new tyres on that by now, brakes will be solid, possible that the fork seals have hardened, you'll want to swap the oil in them, same with engine oil.

I'd drop the oil, run it with new oil in there, drain that out after a few runs and refill it, just to make sure its fairly clean.

or just change the oil an see if it fires?

I'd give it the best possible chances, getting to the inner plugs is a dick, so if you have a small squirt bottle, put a small bit of oil in there and give it a quick squirt, deep spark plug holes too Thumbs Up

Will want some fresh fuel, so might be worth just whipping the tank off anyway.

Plenty of pipes and shit underneath though Laughing

I wasn't a fan of working on the Bandit, others might find it nice and easy, I found my Thundercat far nicer to work on.

Easy to work on, take the tank off, (take off seat pull pipes off and its 2 bolts if you carefull of the side panels) drain any fuel thats been left in, including the carbs, while the tanks off pull the plugs out teaspoon of oil down the bores and turn over (not loads or you could over heat the starter) put back together with fresh fuel and give it a try, brakes will probably need an overhaul aswel.

Shouldn't overheat the starter, just make sure the plugs aren't back in to keep compression at fuck all.

Bloody hell. They're all good, solid suggestions that will give you the best chance possible but, if I'm honest, I'd just charge the battery and crank it over.

This. If it's been sat in a garage with no bits missing then you're unlikely to see problems.

quick update

went to see the bike on the weekend, its looks ok full stainless exhaust with a "carbon" Scorpion pipe

the frame is anodized blue, with gold handlebars....sheeexy!

a couple of parts look a bit rusty, but for bike that hasn't moved in years looks pretty good.

it wouldn't fit in my Transit Connect van so im waiting for someone with a towbar to gimmie a hand...pics to follow

Fresh oil and fresh fuel.

Put a new battery on it and fire it up.

Managed to get 3 bikes that had been sitting for 10 years or so each fired up last week.

No problems so 3 years will be nothing.

I just got a DRZ 400 and managed to get it started. The bike was sitting for 8 years!! Only 328 miles on the clock Shocked Laughing

Drained the tank
Changed the coolant
Cleaned the plug
Oil and filter change
Battery
Brake fluid
Couple of gaskets too but given the time etc

Tried to start it and no joy. Drained the float bowl and the screw was rusted. Carb out and the old fuel had stained everything green for some reason, jets shagged and all sorts of horrible!

New carb in and she fired straight up. Spend a while on the chain if your not replacing, each link and roller was stuck but all shiney and free rolling now, time spent I should have just replaced it.

Put the bike in top gear and slowly turn the wheel to make sure the rings haven't seized in the bores. If nothing moves, soak the bores and leave it for a few days. rock the wheel back and forth to gently free things up. If solid, the more gently you can free them off, the less problems you're likely to have with oil consumption/exhaust smoke later on.

My SV was sat for 5 years, it needed a new tank as the old one had rusted, and carbs needed cleaning and a good 100+ mile run to clear it out.

I did give it a damn good service after that for good measure once I got it running

Hmm well. Yeah if it costs less than £500 to get it tip top and t&t'd its a bargain. But work will be involved for sure.

All fluids, the oil will probably have turned to sludge and you will want to get a few liters of supermarket own brand 10w40 to flush it out thoroughly. Filters: air, fuel, oil. Check all bearings carefully, specially the head racers hehe. Suspension might need regassing or just changing. Carb, I would strip and clean and check its properly adjusted for that race can etc.

The clutch will probably be thoroughly glued together and you'll need to strip it down and clean up the plates. New case gasket probably required.

Brakes will probably (certainly) need rebuilding. Brakes always turn in to epic time sinks on old bikes for some f*** reason. Hope the disks aren't near or at end of life. Deffo do the seals and the caliper pin bushes. Hoses may be shagged. Looks like it needs a new set of tyres .. MOT .. tax ..

P sure those engines don't use valve shims but have a lock nut type adjuster which is a few £££ saved at least!

Get a cheap lead acid or AGM battery. Still gonna run you £30 heh.

£100 down and budget £300-380 and a few weeks of 'me time' for sorting it out and making it legal. Still a bargain if the mileage is low. Sub £500 for a nice bandit is indeed still a bargain, as long as you enjoy spannering. Very Happy

I'd like something like this mainly for the spannering to learn on and not worry massively how long it takes or getting stuck, can't do that on main bike as need it for getting to work everyday

While you're pulling bits apart and cleaning things up, buy a can of electrical contact cleaner and go at every connector you find along the way.
