A guy I know tried something similar, there was a tree he wanted down in his back garden, first he cut all the way through it completely flat and it didnt fall so he ran a rope from his towbar through his garage to the bottom of the tree just above the cut, he then revved the nuts off his car and dumped the clutch.

The car shot forward, yanked the rope which pulled the lower half of the tree into his garage, as the upper half dropped down crushing his fence and the neighbours shed, the lower half pivoted up and ripped half the wall and the roof off his garage.

Around a week later the clutch went on his car too.

This is the honest truth of what happened you had to see it to believe it.

If they'd part cut through to a hinge, the idea of a rope attached high up to start the fall the right way is not unreasonable.

Even the experts will mis-calculate the balance point from time to time, or a wind gust will take it - and the most likely wrong way is the exact opposite of where you wanted it to fall.

In that sort of suburban situation most of the branches should be dropped first really - reducing the weight and making the final trunk felling far more predictable.
