Well, I knew it would happen sooner or later, and today it was sooner!

Just coming out of work after a rather unpleasant day spent dealing with the various denizens of the centre, (including 50+ yugoslavians who spent 5 hours sitting on a kaput plane home that they didnt want to be on in the first place) feeling rather glad to be out of the place.

Come out of the car park, turn into the slip road, look down the main road and see there is no traffic, so carry on in 2nd, turn left and pull away.........kinda.

A combination of too much throttle, or too much leaning, lane banding like polished glass, cold tires, and too little experience and common sense, left me hurtling through the air over my highsided bike, wiggling like a rag doll.

A fellow officer was walking along the road at the time, and ran over to check I was ok, and the first car that had to stop to get round me happened to be a fellow biker.

"Don't worry mate, I'm a biker!" he cried, as he ran up, checked I was ok, dusted me down, then helped me pick the death machine up and wheel it to the pavement.

We inspected the damage, and decided it was perfectly ridable, the most annoying thing being the lack of right mirror and footrest. (and the fact I've only just repaired the bloody thing after some idiot knocked it over)

Considering I was stupid enough to not be wearing my bike jacket, or any proper trousers, I was lucky to come away with nothing but a small cut to the leg, and general bruises and aches.

The other officer is treating me with something akin to awe,(rather than the amused contempt I deserve) having been convinced there was no way I could have survived such a spectacular tumble. Luckily for me, it looked worse than it did.

Net damage - cheap black under-fairing needs replacing, rear brake pedal bent, right footrest and mirror snapped off, and a nice dent in the tank.

I guess it gives me a project for the next month or two, avoiding extortionate labour charges for simple repairs.

Suzi has given me the name of one or two of you that I might try pestering for help and advice, so be warned!

I have to say, I've always been impressed with people's stories of help from total strangers who have bikes themselves, but I was stunned to see it in action.

The guy literally legged it from his car, after pulling up blocking the lane I was having a little snooze in, and did pretty much all the heavy lifting and organising while I sort of pottered about ineffectively.

My next mission, when I'm back at work on sunday, is to make sure neither my place nor the centre next door have CCTV footage of the event. If they do, I shall have to invoke my rights under the Data Protection Act, and the Protect James's Reputation And Ego Act, and spirit the offending footage away.

Well done for seeing the funny side of it. Laughing Glad you're in one piece. You'll probably be a far safer rider as a result... well, at least for a little while. Wink

Nooo, you'll have to publish it on the world-wide interweb so that people can poke fun! Smile Wink

I could do with £250 to fix it! I've looked at the bank balance and it's not good at all! I was going to be broke for the next coupla months anyway, so it looks like me and the old Aerox are going to be good friends for a while. While I've been enjoying getting re-acquainted with the little fellow, I'd really rather have my big beast back in action.

/me scurries off to open a thread in the Workshop section.

Well, as most people seem to be telling me, I was lucky I wasn't injured - it makes it nothing more than an expensive and slightly sore lesson to be more careful.

It also keeps my bike off the road during the salt/ice months, although whether crashing your bike to prevent salt-damage is advisable, I'm not sure......

Indeed, I need more than one hand to count the number of times I could have lowsided today on the greasy roads. Had I been a nervous newbie all over again, I quite possibly would have. I almost got a tankslapper (or certainly something similar) when I had to rather hastily (over?)correct a front slide at about 10 mph. Luckily I still had my feet down.

On the plus side, I'm learnt the feeling of the tyres sliding, which must come in useful somehow, if only to be able to identify the reason for my next crash Rolling Eyes...

eeek, so this is the forum curse is it? Does that mean I get a neat little tag on my profile?

If I'd known that The Curse would lead to me pirouetting through the air at 30mph I would have politely declined the honour!

Oh yes, If your bike looks and works perfectly, be worried!! It works with mountain bikes aswell. If they are working perfectly, they are about to break, or be broken.

Good to hear you only had cuts and bruises and it hasnt done too much damage to the bike. Thumbs Up
