Follow the money. Some Kraut TUV-approved and costumed Uberautobahnenrescuenservice will be delighted to rush to your "assistance" every time you go over a speed bump, and bum you for a statutory 200 Eurodollah a go.

The Nordics and us supine lickspittles will fall over ourselves to meet and exceed the edicts from Berlin Brussels, the rest of the E"U" will just laugh at it, as usual.

Now I haz a sad on a Friday. Sad

On such applications, the EU offers the following scenarios:

“It is also expected that the eCall technology platform capabilities (i.e., positioning, processing and communication modules) could be exploited for additional services (e.g., advanced insurances schemes, stolen vehicles tracking etc).”

Before we start imagining “PRISM for cars” it's worth noting the spec means eCall units are "... not traceable and when there is no emergency (its normal operational status) it is not subject to any constant tracking."

[...]

That means it is probably too early to wonder if “advanced insurances” [sic] could mean insurers tracking drivers to create tailored products and being asked nicely, and secretly, to share that data with law enforcement agencies.

The slightly-worrying bit for me is the insurance bit. However speculative, you just know that insurance companies will find some fantastic ways to use the tech against modern Joe Public.

But I agree with Roger - it depends on how far member states take it / if they even bother implementing it.

Germany will probably say "Well we must lead Europe in this. As usual." and France will probably say "Well Germany's doing it so we have to I suppose." and the UK will say "Arses out lads, let's take this directive to another dimension." and Holland will ask "Has Flanders-Land rolled it out yet?" and Belgium will still be too busy arguing about which language should be predominantly displayed around Greater Brussels and most €-zone countries will say "Well come on now we have much bigger fish to fry, surely..." and Austria will say "Let's just make it look like we're emulating Germany, it'll keep the rest happy." and all other member states won't even have noticed there's a new directive anyway.

So basically, nothing much to worry about... Probably...
