I'm after a (new) cheap helmet. It's purely to save my Shoei suffering from being left in the changing rooms at work, and will be used purely for the slow trek through the city to get there. Hence, I'm not fussed about noise levels, how classy it feels or any thing else i enjoy with the Shoei...
Was it Aldi / Lidl who were doing some at £20ish??

Thanks!

Lids Direct - https://www.lidsdirect.co.uk/helmets/clearance-helmets/box-bx-2-white.html My brother has one of those, padding isn't very plush, other than that, not bad for the price. £30.

As for a bricks and motar store, J&S -
https://www.jsaccessories.co.uk/helmets/full-face/mds-edge-helmet-in-beast.html Looks hideous, but again £30

You can get a Box BX-2 or BX-1 for about £25-30 on eBay (new). Those get pretty good crash ratings. I had the BX-1 when I started riding and it was ok.

is the issue with changing rooms damage or security?
im just thinking if you spent money on a lid you like and fits you wouldnt it be less money to find somewhere to put it thats safe rather than "risk"(im not getting into the cheap lid is less protective thing here because i still think how it fits is the most important thing)being in the wrong hat when/if you have an incident.

If anything you want to be in the cheap hat when you have an incident, no? Less to replace.

Cool

I have a "spare" cheapie helmet that i use if im going to hand it to counter staff for safekeeping, or leave unattended in a locker room. Its not so desirable. My nice helmet is just shinier and newer. Both fit the same. Id just buy whatever fitted well and go with that.

Or as my granddad use to say "stick a ten bob head in a ten bob hat"
I`d rather have the best helmet available on my head, whatever the cost, when my head is heading rapidly towards a solid object.

On a different line of thought, wouldn`t it be better for the OP to buy a padded helmet bag? Then leave that in the locker at work so they don`t have to carry it to/from work. Then if they have to leave the helmet on top of their locker at least it would be protected from dirt etc

There is nothing to suggest that cheaper helmets offer less protection than more expensive ones. In fact 'budget' helmets have often come off better in tests than the premium brands. The difference is in finish mainly and marketing.

This. I have absolutely no idea about helmets but if this is a billion quid and is apparently made of polystyrene, aren't all helmets going to be similarly so? I am sure there is a big diff between a £20 lid and a £700 lid. I suspect its rather like fictional samurai swords in this regard tho - after a certain point there is literally no reason to pay more other than desiring something hand crafted by Hattori Hanzō.

The OP stated that he doesn't believe helmets differ in protection significantly.

On that basis, you want to break your cheap helmet.

My off resulted in essentially a bit of abrasion. I'm glad it was 50 quid.

Thanks people. I found a 'Duchinni' in J&S, at £30. I could have found one at a tenner less on the www if i tried for longer, but was happy to pay the extra for the privilege of trying it on for a good fit. Pleased i did, it's a XL that fits best, if i'd done it by experience i'd be in a L!
To answer the queries of 'ten bob heads in ten bob helmets' and the like, I've had nothing but Shoei or Arai since the early 90's, apart from a fling with a Nitro for a month or two, a Box Helmet for ten miles or so and this Duchinni now. I (my opinion only, feel free to form a queue and disagree) have found that although you may well get similar protection level levels regardless (Sharp testing, ACU stamps and BS wotsit testing) the Arai and Shoei feel like a more pleasant place to shove my head. The fit is better, padding more comfortable, venting better and visor release easier (even on Arai, when you get used to it). The cheaper hats seem noisier, with poorer padding, and i found the Nitro had a habit of lifting off my head slightly when 'pressing on'.

Thanks for the links and advice folks!

Ian

£15! surely they can't be safe!

Helmet is a helmet, it fits well and is rated the same as another higher priced branded lid.

With the rate I chew tarmac, pricey lids are a no no Laughing
