Hi there, I got a 99 cg, (kickstart) and having a few problems getting the beast going. I can't seem to get a spark, and i replaced the coil and flasher, but the spark isn't there, I'm sure i'm doing something foolish, any idea what the next logical problem should be?
I initially thought it was a leak in the intake manifold when it had a bit of a spark, on replacing that it hasn't rectified the problem.

Any advice would be graciously accepted.

Many thanks

Hi there,
the first thing I would do would be to download from the internet the wiring diagram for your CG.

As it is a 1999 model it probably is a Brazillian model ?

The Brazil model has a CDI, with no points.

If you have a multimeter ; that will help, or find someone with one with the time and patience to track down why there is no spark.

Connections to the ignition switch are the first point, and then all connections through to the coil and the spark plug. (Buy a new one ; just in case it is the plug !!).

If you know someone with a CG of a similar age ; I would swap over the CDI, then the Coil to see if it were these two first.

This is all very general ; but getting someone who knows a bit about motorbike electrics will help.

Be careful if you do start to buy bits for it ; as many clueless vendors on places like e.bay assume that one bit fits all Cg's ; they dont : (expecially Chinese clone stuff ; some do, others dont).

All the best with it.

David.

Ah yes many thanks,

yeah first thing I did was replace the plug, it is a CDI model, i'll start methodically with the ignition onwards, thank you for your advice.

Appreciate it!

Just another question, I can't seem to place the problem along the electrical system, I tested the coil with the multimeter before i got a new one and the reading from the coil to the spark plug end was around 2.0 in the 2k reading the new one reads around 8, I have found various sources detailing the reading should be around 14.0 anyone have a definitive answer for the reading from the coil plug to the spark plug end?

Just in case i was sold a malfunctioning coil, at this point anything seems viable.

Thanks

Davey

My CG is an older one without a CDI so the following information may be no use to you at all... However, there may be enough similarities.

I found from the wiring diagram for my CG that the ignition circuit is very simple, and essentially separate from the rest of the wiring loom (so changing flasher unit won't help). The only components involved are:

-- generator coils
-- points (I guess you won't have points)
-- magneto
-- ignition switch
-- ignition coil and condenser (I guess you don't have a condenser)
-- spark plug lead and cap
-- spark plug

So if there's no spark somethings wrong with one of those. All the ignition switch does is disconnect an earth wire from the ignition circuit (so when the ignition is on the electricity no longer just goes to ground, and instead goes to the ignition coil), so you can easily check if the switch is faulty by disconnecting two of the wires coming out the back of it - see wiring diagram for which ones.

Otherwise, check the points gap (if you have points) and spark plug gap, check/clean all connections and earths in the ignition circuit, check that the centrifugal arm things in the magneto (which advance the timing at higher revs) aren't stuck (although you might not have them at all...), and, if all else fails, try replacement generator coils.

Also, I bought a dodgy ignition coil a while ago, so it's entirely possible that you have a faulty replacement!

Again, this information applies to my older, more primitive CG, so check the details of all this! You really need a wiring diagram - it'll be in the Haynes manual, if you have it.

Hope this helps a bit!

Yes many thanks, that gives me a few more places to look into, again, much appreciated.
