9" x 7" is the legal limit. I usually go with 8 x 6 but I got stopped once (for something else) and the copper said I don't think that plate is the right size, get it sorted out.

£60 non endorsable fine for one of those and, if they catch you twice, the DVLA will take your private plate away.

8x6 you can get away with easily, anything smaller and its a big risk.

Any plate is legal to order. Not every plate is legal on the road, only 9x7 technically is. Realistically, an 8x6 would seldom attract any adverse attention, unless a copper wants to do you for something.

You might get away with one slightly smaller, it is a bit like waving a sign 'please stop me' so everything else wants to be in perfect order, or they'll have a field day.
Have to admit smaller bikes do look better without the rear sail.

There isn't a minimum legal overall size, as far as I've been able to ascertain, but there are legal requirements for font type, letter size, character spacing, border size, background colours, E marking and postcode of manufacturer, all of which are pretty restrictive with respect to overall dimensions.

Also, a single line plate is illegal too.

What if I paid loads for a plate that was only a few digits long? Like 'R1'?

FTR, mine is 7x6.5 and conforms to all legal requirements with respect to size of characters, spacing and borders. It also bears the manufacturer's postcode.

I still expect to get pulled at some point.

If you can get a plate that size with an E mark and manufacturer's postcode I believe you're golden from a legal standpoint.

Good luck not getting pulled every day.

Why go out of our way to give the police the satisfaction of doing us?

We are literally giving it to them on a plate. Rolling Eyes

Either make it small enough that it can't be read and don't stop or don't bother imo.

Same, my old plate that came with the bike was actually oversized, there was like a 4" border!

New one is about 7x6, but font, letters, spacing etc is all legit, postcode, BS number and all that.

As i think someone else vagely mentioned - the rules surrounding plate size in the uk aren't actually to do with PLATE size. They govern the minimum/maximum character/boarder etc size. Ultimately this does govern the plate size of course, but in the case of a reg 'R1' as you said, it would actually allow a very small and still legal plate.

All that aside 9x7 is the only legit way to go, but you will get away with 8x6 almost definately i would say.

From personal experience with a cheeky reg Rolling Eyes , 7x5/6x4 you should be okay with if you don't ride like an idiot, but again it all depends on your local police Wink

I'd say you're actually 'safer' riding in town/heavy traffic where you might think its 'heavily policed' with a dodgy plate as they rarely will bother or even attempt to pull you in heavy traffic presuming you will probably filter away into the distance.

Most of my friends who've been plate-pulled have been on quiet no-where roads they thought were perfectly fine but had a bored-patrol car/bike parked up on waiting for an excuse.

Also - i may be wrong but i THINK the fine for an incorrect plate is now 100 pounds possibly, in-line with increased fixed penalty notice rates for speeding etc, but verify that first i may be wrong Thumbs Up

They have been hotter on plates since they got the cameras than can automatically check the database for stolen/uninsured as vehicles pass.
You still see plenty of cars with wrong scripts and changed spacing to almost spell names.

Experimented for years with every combination. Had a few fines.
Now I always go for 8 x 6, standard font, BS 145d mark on corner, and a standard company slogan such as wilco or halfords with respective postcode.

Only other borderline I push is angle that its mounted at. And the fact that the tail light lights it red.

Been pulled a few times but never for plates or even had them questioned.

See sig for look

Just find the postcode for your local wilco/halfords/dealer and substitute a slogan with it.

Mine is 7 x 5 and perfectly adequate. Any pig who stops me for it will have proved by default he's a pathetic jobsworth tosser who shouldn't be on the force.

When I was ordering mine, I read somewhere that single-line plates are illegal on bikes, which initially makes sense as something like 'AA56 ABC' on a single-line would make the font very small, and illegal.

But as mentioned above regarding private plates, does anyone know if there is a set number of characters for a single plate?

Something like 'R1' would have to be single-line, but what about 'AB1', 'ABC1', 'ABC12' etc..

The required sizes are set out below.

Height 64mm (&#frac12; ")
Width 44mm (1 3/4")
Stroke 10mm (3/8")
Space between characters 10mm (3/8")
Space between groups 30mm (1")
Top, side & bottom margin 11mm (3/8)

I wouldn't be able to tell you off hand but you could taking some time work out just how many letters you could fit into those boundaries whilst keeping it still on a single line.

Which letters/numbers make up the reg I think will also play a part, for example '1' is thinner than 'H' i would imagine.

They CAN take it away after two times - if its private of course. But i've never ever heard of this actually happening even to someone i know who prolifically took the p-ss and got about 10 tickets over 2 years for the same quite offensive plate Laughing
