This evening coming home saw something really out of the ordinary.

Came up to the OVAL tube station junction, a few cars ahead of me
and we are stopped at the lights. Lights went green, no movement,
lights went red. I filtered up to the head of the queue to see this
scooter in the middle of the junction ON FIRE.

I didn't see what make and model and I didn't have a camera but
the fire was coming from the front of the scooter. All the traffic was
at a standstill till the police arrived and put out the fire with a very
small extinguisher.

Now I've been riding bikes for over 20 years, I thought I had seen
it all.

The owner of the scooter was just an ordinary commuter on his way
home after a hard day at the office, kind of felt sorry for him.

This is completely Off Topic, but why do all of your posts not fill the space up?

They are really not very wide at all. Confused

ON topic, seems strange, why would a scooter catch on fire?

Being at the front end it was probably an electrical fire. Cant really think of why else the front would be on fire.

I always post like it, even on newsgroups, just a habit I picked up.

As for a scooter catching fire, I wish I knew, been wondering how!

I'm an Idiot, I forgot to mention that the scooter had been
involved in an accident with a car.

It does happen though. Happened to my mates BSA chop just as he was riding off on it.

He even had the foresight to take photos... for the insurance and not your gratuitous ammusement I'll have you know.

BSA's were designed to go up in flames... They had a small metal tray under the carbs to catch any fuel that leaked out when you tickled the Amals. I assume this was to prevent it from dripping down & getting on the rear tire.. however, in reality what usually happened was the tray filled up with petrol, owner lunges on the kickstart, bike backfires & ignites the puddle of petrol in the metal tray & the result is BSA Flambe'

'I got an idea boss... why dont me make a bike what'll burst into flame?'

There any form of way of this design fault getting changed/fixed/claimed off?

I would have thought if its a safety flaw in the design the company would want to recall them etc... (like they do on cars sometimes) or does that type of thing not happen?

Wotcha.

Never seen that on a BSA - they did have a "ski-jump", which was a metal chute beneath the carb which sent any fuel overflow behind the gearbox, and on to the floor. Should you fail to fit this ski-jump, any petrol leakage would seep through the gearbox gaskets and dilute the gearbox oil - oh what fun that used to be Shocked

The one bike that did like to self-combust was the in line, 500 twin made by BSA, but craftily called the "Sunbeam".
This jolly bit of design saw the carb placed neatly in between the two exhaust down pipes.
Take a look at this piccy to see what I mean.
Tickle that carb at your own peril Mr. Green
