That's my biggest fear! Getting crashed in to from behind whilst you're stationary. When I had a vehicle tracking company, a client of ours had that happen to him but the driver was drunk (as was that Russian more than likely) and he flew some 20ft in the air and broke his back. Spent a year in hospital and another 6 months to walk again.

Shocked

The driver of the domestic SUV did not even bother to stop at a red light, and after a collision just left the accident scene.

Not something I've ever heard of being a problem in the UK, but on US forums I've read a few posts about staying in first and watching mirrors if there's nothing queuing behind you, being ready to get out of the way.
Kinda makes sense I guess.

This is part of my standard routine approaching lights.

Already a queue? Space to filter? Yes? Great, pick your way through nice and gently.

No? What's behind me? How far away is he? Should I slow down earlier to make sure he's slowing too? When I'm already stopped, constantly watching the mirrors. Anyone coming? Are they slowing? If they don't, where am I going to go?

Always have an escape route.
