Hi Guys

I'm a bit new to the scene, can anyone tell me what's the deal on track bikes ? i sometimes see monster machines advertised cheap, and they look in pretty good shape.

Are these bikes stolen, are they burnt out, will i be duped when buying such a machine ? What's the catch ?

Advertised as low km as well, ie a cbr600 @ 6000km (but does that mean 6000km on the track where the bike has been abused ?)

Can these bikes be made roadworthy ?

Usually come with no documents. Some do, road reg'd ones tend to command a bit more but typically as long as you have some documentation they can be put on the road with no lights.

Thats normally why i'd avoid thinking of road-converting a tracked bike to be honest, as you unfortunantely just don't know how much and how badly its been tracked.

Sometimes you might get one that would make a decent road bike and has been well track-maintained etc, but other times it might look a good deal and look clean but internally have been worked like a donkey

There are a LOT of stolen track bikes out there, and there are also a lot of write offs and unroadworthy machines.

This is why when I wanted a track bike I looked for a cheap road bike rather than a track specific bike. It's easier to do maintenance on a bike you can ride on the road anyway.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Be very wary purchasing track bikes with no documents, there are many stolen bikes out there at track days.

A lot may be costly to convert back to the road also, as may be missing road parts that aren't necessary on the track and may also have modified looms etc.
