I'm having to go through a couple of insurance issues, one of which is declarations.

Timeline:

Had some minor 3pointer.
'10 Pickup another 3points (cant recall what)
'12 Pickup IN10 (6pointer).
Court awards me TT99, £250fine/6month disqualification.

Licence comes back, 0 points and shows 'TT99 Nil fine, Nil points' or similar.

My current cage insurers said on the phone 'we just need to know what the counterpart shows, the premium is based on that'. They weren't interested in previous stuff. Now I'm hearing that stuff within 5years IS to be declared?
The difference for me is an average of £1K per policy, regardless of type/car.

So, I have 0 convictions and insurance companies typically ask for stuff in the last 5 years. I dont want to get caught up on a technicality - what do I declare?

Just give what your insurers ask.

If you're really worried about it, record the phonecall to them....

I did for one call, but when it comes to buying online (say I buy a new car on Saturday night) I'm a bit stuck with what info I should give 'em.

Why not just ring up the cheapest insurer from your quote? Doing over the phone won't take that much longer than doing it online with the amount of stuff you have to click through.

I haven't mentioned anything on Facebonk but I'm trying to seal the deal on a replacement car, and the likely pickup of it would be the weekend when insurance is 'closed', I'd do it before but won't have money until kinda the weekend and I need to insure before I drive it nearly 40miles back.. Neutral Trust me. Rolling Eyes Laughing

I've always been asked about accidents, claims and convictions in the last 5 years.

I'd be verrrry careful about believing anything that you're told on the phone, recorded or otherwise. You'll be speaking to a sales/retention monkey who will say anything to hit their targets and make their commission, knowing that it'll be someone else's problem to sort it out later.

But what do you actually declare?

The entire set, since you've earned the right Embarassed , or 0, because your licence states 0 and that's what they apparently go on?

IMO declare everything. They've asked for all your endorsements in the last 5 years, though technically whatever is on the counterpart only has to stay on for four years for certain offences. Other than that just declare the TS99 and let them ask. I'd do it by phone rather than online.

If you do go online and go through a comparison site make sure you check the details with a very fine tooth comb. My insurer somehow managed to miss off the commuting element then conveniently tried to charge me £35 admin to change it. They got told to do one since I was inside the 14 day cooling off period and would cancel and re-buy at no penalty. Funnily enough they waived the fee.

Me, nothing. Very Happy

There was a point where an SP30 had dropped off of my counterpart (after 4 years) but was still within the 5 years, and I did declare that because of the aforementioned suspicion that the chap on the phone has exactly no idea about what a claims handler is actually going to do, or what the DVLA will tell them.
