After buying my 125 varadero, 2005, a couple of weeks ago I'm slowing sorting the niggles out.

The rear brake was dull and I could see the pads were past their best so called in for a set after work today and set about the job. The piston wanted a clean and after pushing it back I noticed the slides were stif/seized.

A couple of bolts and the caliper should come off, well it was tight but a bit of copper slip would sort the threads etc and run a die down em to clean em up.

Now, which idiot thought it was a good idea to use aluminium calliper body and steel slide pins? Come forward and I will slap you. Moron!

Four bleeding hours to change two pads! I had to use a slide hammer in the end with some heat to liberate the slide. What a bag of a job. Anyway I refurbed the calliper and refitted, bled and it all looked and worked as it should.

Took it for a test ride to the stables and slowing from 70mph to the little down hill tight left bend before a t junction felt extremely safe and solid braking. Happy days, called in at the stables to see the mrs and my horse, put bike on stand, walekd away and doosh, bike fell over and broke the front brake lever!

What a twat of an afternoon! I felt like basil fawlty, all the hard work doing the rear calliper and the bike is unusable!

Anyone else have worse luck today?

I'll admit I've accidentally done that.... the first time I got the zxr running I took it along the road and when I got to the end I had thick smoke coming from under the petrol tank, so I killed the engine put the stand down and almost ripped the petrol tank off. Unfortunately the combination of pulling the tank, slight downhill slope and stand not being down properly caused the bike to go straight over. (turns out the connections for the horn connected to the frame and fried part of the loom

Done it also, bike fell over about 3 minutes after I left it. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes I would think someone knocked it over, but I was sitting on the wall waiting for someone, saw movement out of the corner of me eye, then crunch Rolling Eyes

Sidestand couldn't have been fully extended.

How did you put it on its stand (left hand side) and it fell and broke the brake lever (right hand side)?

The Vara is a dangerously upright bike. Stand is far too long.

Nt sure if its worse or the same but my MOT ran out last week..... couldnt put it in as I needed new brake calipers as my front right one seized on as soon as the weather was good.... :S...so I ordered a whole caliper/lines/master cylinder and new braided lines....thecalipers are from an oldermodel so wouldnt fit clever me!

So I called a breakers in Yorkshire and managed to get two calipers sent on friday 'next day delivery' so as post comes on a Saturday I thought I would have the MOT sorted on Saturday afternoon, in time for a Sunday ride.. but no the company do not deliver on a Saturday so yesterday came and they were delivered, yesterday evening came and when myself and my cousin (luckily knows a lot more than me) come to fit the calipers and the thread was gone so we re-threaded, then attached them.... filled the lines...got rid of air..... and the left caliper is not working properly.... loud clicking noise and the bottom half is noticably moving, and cannot get alot of pressure in the brake, so tonight the plan is to try my old left caliper with the newer right one and hope that with a lot of money spent it will be problem solved

Done sim thing couple weeks ago on a meet to the IOW. we all stopped to wait for some back markers and I was at the back, due to dodgy front brake! (It caught fire 3miles from the ferry!) and we had loads of bikes so I was stuck on the downhill part of the road. I stuck the bike on the side stand and got off, 1 minute later after shutting back box and walking round it rolled forward off the stand and fell on its side trapping my leg in the process.

Lucky for me the GS500 in front stopped it rolling into all the other bikes Laughing and a few lads gave us a hand getting her upright. Also was on a grass verge so that and my leg saved any damage.

Although I did have an orange sized bruise and cuts on my leg.

Great way to impress new biker buddies on my 1st meet. Embarassed

Same here.

*In my defence we were supposed to meet at the Cat n Fiddle pub but it was shut. I noticed them parked at the cafe and pulled in. The parking is on a hill and I didn't put the sidestand down all the way. It fell over quite gently and only a few scratches to the mirror and pannier.
I felt it broke the ice.

It's nice to know people have also done a similar trick!

I must have put the stand somehow higher than it should be or put the wheels in a dip, it fell over to the right hand side and missed a car by a few inches!

They are only just down from the 90 degree position so I would imagine a stone under the stand would do the job nicely! And did!

It's all fixed now though, a couple of extra scratches on the front fairing and the exhaust heat shield on the silencer. I will have to see what can be done to make it more sturdy. A strong wind would knock it over.

Any suggestions. Maybe take it off and cut the foot off it and shave half a cm off?

It would be good to raise the rear suspension a little that would also bring it in better position for me. Only need a small amount.

when parking my vara I'd always turn the bars before putting on the stand, then as I got off, would pull the bike back against the stand slightly to make sure it was fully extended,

I'd also always park facing uphill slightly if possible, if not, across the hill.

I normally do double check, just had a senior moment!!! Mind you I'd rather drop a 125 than a 1000 if I have to drop any at all!!!

I am waiting for my Duke to do that, most of the time I end up having to wheel the bike around until I find a spot where I can actually put the stand down as it's way too high.

That said I know my mate has ridden his bike to the shops, got off, walked into the shop and waiting at the till someone asks him "Is that your bike?" as you just see it free wheeling down the hill past the window Laughing Laughing
