Had the last of my sprint races at the weekend and finally broke into the top 10 in my group (out of 28). I also had a camera this time...

Ready for BCF's armchair racers to critique my technique on every corner Smile This wasn't my fastest run, but my camera ran out of juice before my fastest time...

And here's how it should be done (by the winner of the other group):

(random banter rather than the racing section as it's cars and not bikes).

And finally finished processing:

My little spin on the chicane Sad I know this'll be the one people find slightly more entertaining.

It's funny isn't it, my camera always runs out before I can record my fast laps, too. Whistle Wink

Bah! I did say 'fast lap' I said 'my fastest'... big difference Wink

Joking aside, it is rather annoying as I can't compare my best with the other vids available.

The lap I posted was 81.34s, my fastest was 78.93 - it's quite a difference and I'd like to know where I made it up... and where there's an extra 4s on top of that to be gained!

It's a 1.6 from a ford focus, tuned to a mere 125bhp. 0-60 in a bit over 5s which just shows you what adding lightness can do...

The same engine in the super sport sevens (140bhp) can bring it down to 4.9s although they have a close ratio 6 speed instead of the road spec 5 speed.

That's a very tail happy set up you've got there, I would try and dial some of that out, I reckon you've got more speed to come, if only it wasn't constantly on the verge of stepping out.

I'm afraid that's mainly my driving style and a bit par for the course with Caterhams.

After a few laps and some instruction at Cadwell the tail happy nature disappeared and it was understeering most of the time. What I need to do is push harder into some of the corners and use more road on the way out.

Because of the way the camera is set up, it's a little hard to tell, but there doesn't seem to be much wrong with your style; you're hitting most of the apexes, you don't seem to be turning in mega early, but that car is getting loose mid corner, which doesn't inspire a great deal of confidence.

Comparing your worst run to the class winner, he takes a similar line and pulls a massive locker into that chicane, but still gets through OK, whereas you lose it going in, for no apparent reason.

Later in the lap, the only time he gets crossed up is firing it out of the last corner, you get some significant oversteer exiting at least two corners.

Are you thinking that's because you're trying too hard to keep a tight line?

The Caterhams that I have driven didn't seem to be as wayward as that, so I'm wondering, do they tell you how to set the car up, then try and teach you how to drive it?

That looks like a shitload of fun, daemonoid.

IAAACR*, but I reckon the places where you lost the most time, were a little squirm at 0:20, a tendency to go on the throttle a little late, most obvious at 0:43 and a bigger wiggle at 1.07.

Saying that purely from the perspective of an outsider looking in - I do know for a fact that actually being behind the wheel is a totally different thing to watching on the screen. I'd love to give that a go though, it really does look like my kind of thing.

Really enjoyed those videos.

We did have a setup day where we were taught how to get it sorted properly and I've messed with tyre pressures until I've found a balance I like (32f 30r hot). It's also been flat floored at Caterham.

I'm pretty sure it's just my driving style - I'm fairly gentle on the brakes but twitchy on the steering. When I get 'dialled in' at a track the oversteer just goes away and I end up understeering everywhere. That's a sign of a well balanced car, I just need to pull my level up to match it's capabilities. Much as I would like to blame the setup it's unfortunately the meat behind the wheel that's causing most of the problems. I think you're right about me trying too hard to keep a tight line though - I need to use more track and let the car balance itself.

On a sprint we get 2 practice runs followed by 2-4 timed runs so I don't manage to get used to the circuit. Races next though... Donnington on the 13/14th July!

Spudly - the squirms on the way into corners barely affect the times, but you're right... more throttle, earlier and let the car pull away itself rather than wiggle while I correct the line on the way out.

Glad you enjoyed them, they're a really useful tool for me too. I just wish I'd got that last run on cam Sad
