was riding home from seeing a mate in gloucester last night, circa 0230 in lampeter, ceredigion.

I have been told there's some sort of local by law that if they follow and you don't stop, they have to leave it be so as not to make you speed and die.... potentially. not sure if this is bullshit or not, but the coppers behaviour certainly lent credence to the idea...

rather than let me pass, turn and follow me, and pull me over... they swerved right in front of me blocking both sides of the road (volvo estate).... and slapped the blues on as they did it.

I had to slam on the brakes pretty sharpish as they didn't leave me much room.

he claimed it was because there'd been a lot of theft and he had to do a vehicle check.

is it not dangerous as hell to just swerve a car into the path of a motorcycle? especially if it's in order to avoid chasing them and potentially injuring the rider... seems a quicker way to cause an accident to me.

Come on, who among us given the chance to pretend to be the sweeny wouldn't be swerving in front of other vehicles to stop them rather than a lacklustre flash from behind. Hell I'd be out and sliding across the bonnet at every stop for good measure.

Wouldn't that risk dropping your donuts/coffee?

If he's not a biker he probably has no concept of what he's doing / potential for your injury.
I remember my dad going mental at a copper who jumped out into the road in front of him as they were randomly pulling people (and every motorbike that passed) and then directed him onto a load of loose gravel. The copper didn't have his warrant card on him either, which made for an amusing "I don't believe you're a real policeman and will only talk to your colleague" argument.

I'd say it's worth writing a letter of complaint regarding your concern at the way in which his manoeuvre caused you to take emergency avoiding action if was as bad as you suggest.
Furthermore, did a bike matching yours get reported stolen that night? If not, what grounds did he have for stopping you? Sounds like bollocks to me.
Bored copper being a dick.

I'd tend to agree... i was questioned and had checks run on me and my passenger last year sitting in a rover hatchback eating biscuits up on the mountains. because of some recent "gate thefts" ... because farm gates are easily concealed in a rover 216 aren't they.

and earlier this year... whilst driving an ibiza, i was pulled over and checked etc because of "trailer theft"... i had no tow bar. nor did i have a trailer.

Yeah this rozzer in particular is being a bit of a nob, but would you rather they didn't check for stolen bikes at all? t least they're out and actively checking bikes.

I'm actually ambivalent on this one, depending on how close you were when they pulled the handbrake.

OK, they were doing a Sweeny, but... they saw an oncoming headlight, it was the Thieving Hour, and bikes do get nicked a lot.

There's also a reasonable chance that the rider was either under the influence of or doing deliveries of Certain Substances.

So I'd call that actual policing. Bit annoying if they make a habit of it, but if it was a quick check and then on-your-way... sorry, I'm not feeling the rage. Sad

wasnt so much rage as wondering if these "do not chase" bylaws are actually real or not.

and the dangerous way in which i was stopped.

as i mentioned in my other reply, i've been stopped for far less likely reasons. and in general i do get stopped a lot so i'm used to it. the joys of dyfed powys police.

like you say, at least they are checking bikes aren't stolen.

didn't check the bike though... just ran the plate and checked my insurance on the radio.

no its not a law or bylaw that they cant chase bikes. its just not the preferred option because of the danger.

The sadistic policemen around my way seem to enjoy blasting their sirens just as they pass unsuspecting motorcyclists coming the other way... I can only imagine they are frustrated about not having guns so have to find other ways to murder innocent people Thinking

It'll be Farce policy.

File a FOI, although they may reject it as "protected operational information".

I have a very high regard for dyfed Powys police:

I was on holiday from Rotherham and staying at a campsite at betws Ivan not far from newquay. On our last day we went for a bacon but tie from the lay by up the road. As I drove at 50mph a panda car came up the rear, checked my car and then overtook realising I wasn't from the area that explained me going slower that the limit.

As I then slowed to turn right into the lay by, a vw golf crunched all the way down my right side as he tried to over take me, I floored my car and pushed him into the lay by so a, he didn't get away and b, he didn't roll me.

Hearing the crunch, a traffic officer from said force was soon on the scene as his bacon buttie was not quite ready.

I was close to tearing off the idiots head who had smashed my car up and put my then wife and small child in danger 200 miles from home.

The officer calmly and in a very welsh accent said "you stay in your car" as he pointed to my glowing read face!

He then rounded on the buffoon in the golf and said " that's a bit silly isn it overtaking whilst someone is turning right"

Buffoon smugly " I didn't seem his indicators"

To which the officer broke my anger and cracked me up in his very welsh reply " they are there" pointing at them with the same finger he pointed at me "they are still flashing see"

After the usual breath test and details check statements and recovery for the golf, my soft top escort was allowed to drive back to the camp due to the child and the major but less disabling damage.

A few months later it was all tied up and they recommended the other bloke go on a speed course and driver improvement thing the whole thing was handled quickly and professionally by the officers, including the two in the panda car.

I suppose its not just the three of them in that force but its nice to know there is at least three who can do the job well!

youre right, there are a few good eggs. but on the whole i think their lack of things to do makes them target motorists on cockamamy "crackdowns" of varying sorts. they have even started demanding the details and production of identification from passengers in our cars despite having no power or reason to do so.

Seriously? Anyone who rides late at night is either a thief, drug dealer or a piss head?
Doesn't seem that reasonable to me.

Indeed. Sounds more like pre-wall-came-down East Germany.

Around here the two most common things on bikes at that sort of hour are all-night takeaway deliveries... and police motorcyclists.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall if he tried that stunt with the latter.

Ooh! Lovely bit of Wales, that. Had some bloody great times around there as a kid. Hoping to get over there again soon, tbh - though a bit nearer to new quay and the cost than where you were if I can.

Sorry everyone - carry on. Wink

Depends where you put the stress.

For example: they don't need to have any reason to pull anyone over, at any time.

Small hours, they had nothing better to do, why not see if all's well?

I'm actually quite pleased to hear that there were some coppers on duty and patrolling at that time. Round my gaff you're (un)lucky to see one after 7pm, and then they'll be on their way to a "Shannel pure texted me that mah Kappa trackies are minging, that's so totally harassment" emergency.

There doesn't have to be a bike matching the OP's and stolen that night, in order to justify a stop. You're confusing reasonable suspicion (required for s.1 PACE and similar searches) with elements of Road Traffic Act 1988.

A police officer in uniform can stop a mechanically propelled vehicle on a road in order to inspect the driver's credentials (i.e licence etc) at any time. It's as simple as that.

Sections 163 and onwards - https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1988/52/contents

That said, bike thieves don't go out and steal the exact same make and model of bike each night. One night they might bag a KTM or a Suzuki, the next night a Honda - trailies and quads are popular targets for theft, so I'd stop them at night especially if anywhere near where previous similar thefts have occurred.

Remove the rear seat and there's suddenly a lot of room in the rear of a family hatchback. Plenty of room to bolt in a tank for carrying away stolen diesel, etc ...

Don't bother with an FoI request, the information's in the public domain already. The thrust of it, if you search for ACPO and individual force polices is that motorcycles can be pursued, but there are few tactics available to bring them to a stop (other than in extreme circumstances.) Other options are then looked at i.e. trace the person involved by other means, use a helicopter etc.

Thankfully I didn't get pulled over today (excessive speeding around a roundabout with foot pegs scrapping the floor) saw the police car, gradually slowed down and continued to ride casually with him up my arse, until we went passed the police station where he turned in; thankfully it was about 12:30 so he might of been hungry.
